and this whole thing is based off the assumption that you can quantify how much effect each coach has - which in my experience is not very easy to do.

Just like everyone who wants to spend top dollar for a DeLorean car...just because you pay money for it doesn't mean it's a good product.

So basically no reasoning at all then.

They make a difference. It's more when you have a bad one rather than when you have an average one but you can tell. I personally think you'd have to have an average coach for the entire development period of a player to even notice.

Yeah, just because someone is in charge doesn't mean he's more important. Gotcha!

In MLB, I'd say BC is most prestige after manager. It appears as though the fielding coach duties are split-up into catching, outfield and infield instructor and usually assigned to coaches already on the team. While I don't normally promote Wikipedia research, this article on Wikipedia seems to be pretty legit.

By this standard, Petino's AD is more important than he is, because he's "in charge" and can fire Petino. And around we go.

You're very naive if you think the AD is running that show. The same can be said about any basketball/football power.
2/16/2010 5:05 PM
Really? Was Charlie Weiss running the ND show last fall? Or was someone else in charge?
2/16/2010 5:09 PM
Yep. The alumni and boosters were in charge. You really don't know this?

And, by the way, ND hasn't been a football power for quite some time.

Back to the issue:

3/4 of the way thru coach hiring phase, and 13 FI's still to be hired. THREE have rating over 56. That's just wrong.

Most teams have a roving fielding instructor as well. This is what the FI in HBD represents and why he has an effect on all levels of your system.

I'm not in this world but in all the older worlds I am in there are always guys asking for other jobs that have a glove rating over 50. Look at all ML coaches not just FI. Then search all AAA coaches ect. You may find there are a few out there.
