You know, the more that I think about it, since UK is probably going to vacate this tournament appearance anyway, wouldn't it make more sense just to let the underdog win? It will save the poor folks who hang the banners at Rupp from having to remove this particular one.

What happens if they need to revoke a tournament championship. Will the loser be considered the winner.... If so that would be a joke.

I don't think the NCAA would ever vacate a championship. Surely, UNLV in the early 90's would have been a candidate for that, but their championship was never touched. Final Fours, yes (tOSU '99, Memphis '08, and UMass '96 of recent vintage), but never a championship. That would be a fustercluck.

im really not that worried about cal. we were whacked hard from what sutton did, and i think that is when we created our compliance office. sandy bell is on top of that ****.

plus, with the guys cal has put in the NBA, and his recent success, and the incredible program he has behind him, i think he has no need to play it anything but by the books. as Rupp so eloquently put it -

"You can take a boy to the Coliseum, sit him down for 5 minutes, and if he doesn't want to play at Kentucky after just looking at the place, he is too dumb to go to college anyway."-Adolph Rupp

Rupp was the master story teller. His post-game interviews were always entertaining. Other quotes:

During a practice session with the freshmen Rupp was encouraging the players to be more aggressive. "Beat the other fellow to the charge," he said. "Hit hard; remember the Bible says, 'It's better to give than to receive.'" "But coach," one player countered, "I always thought the Bible said, 'Love thine enemies.'" "That's the old version of it," Rupp snapped back, "But the rules committee changed it."

***

In the 1950’s, Kentucky was playing and the score was like 30-6 in favor of UK. At halftime he asked who was guarding the man that had scored 4 of his teams 6 points.

The player raised his arm and Rupp replied "Your man is running wild and tearing us up. Guard him a little closer."

****

"I know I have plenty of enemies, but I'd rather be the most-hated winning coach in the country than the most-popular losing one."

Once a cheater, always a cheater. It's not a fluke, or a mistake when you get stripped of two final 4's.

Cal is the biggest attention-whore and cheat in Basketball. Bob Knight said it best a couple months ago.

I really hope the NBA comes calling for Cal again, because knowing him he would jump at it.

The NCAA has vacated championships in other sports, but never basketball. As for the original question, the champions in question had to return their title hardware, but no, the championship was not given to the runner-up, there is just no champion recorded in the record books for that year.

I wouldn't say they'd never do it in basketball, but I suspect it would take quite a lot and they'd try to avoid it at all costs.

The 1996 Final Four appearance Calipari made while coaching UMass was vacated when it was found that star Marcus Camby took money from an NBA agent. What possible benefit could that be to Calipari???

Cal's crooked.

At the 08 Final Four I ended sitting next to the guy who was Huggins' top ***'t at Cincy, among other things. He proclaimed Calipari, "the dirtiest coach in college basketball". Everyone I know who's involved in the sport has had similar things to say.

His tight affiliation with World Wide Wes doesn't exactly leave much to the imagination. There's no question that Cal's crooked; the only question is whether or not he gets caught.

The thing is, Coach Cal is definitely a shady coach. However, he has great success and right now Kentucky craves that so their fans are willing to overlook that. Also, since he is their coach they feel the need to defend him.

However... they still have the same feelings about him. On the Kentucky forums on rivals there was a thread about Cal while he was at Memphis. Everyone on the board was ripping into him and joking about how much he cheated. Since now he is their coach, obviously they are going to defend him as long as he isn't caught and gets the job done.

TMac, I think that's a pretty damn good assessment.

I feel ya TMac. I just hope for the Wildcat fans you don't end up like us Hoosier fans did with Sampson taking us farther back.

I still don't get the Scamson hire. That was such a poor choice for so many reasons for Indiana.
