So kentol took the 1967 St. Louis Cardinals. Nice pick. One of my highest rated teams in this iteration. Lots of pitching. But they are a $76M team. Not sure you can roster all of your available hitters above $5M but you have some nice options and quite a bit of flexibility. IMO you can fill 7 of 8 starting positions, 4 starting pitchers, and 2 relievers. 4 of your starting positions are $5M and up. Two are at or above $6.0M. What you need is a 3B, some RP’s, and maybe cheaper options at 1B, C, and in the OF.
At 1st I thought to give you one of those 1927, can’t pitch and hitters don’t normalize well teams but they tended to fill your team nicely since you don’t need much pitching. I saw a few 1977 candidates that looked painful but with some workable pieces. Then I came across the 1947 Chicago Cubs. Their best players are: 1B Eddie Waitkus (you have Cepeda), and OF’s Andy Pafko, Phil Cavaretta, and Bill Nicholson (You have Brock, Flood, and Maris). You do get a very cheap 3B option in Peanuts Lowery but you’ll need to give him some support since he only has 519 PA’s.
Past those 5 this team doesn’t offer much. Their best pitching option has a 3.49 ERC# but hey, that might be ok in this league. There are 6 sub-$1M players on this team so maybe that helps?
Interesting note on Eddie Waitkus. He was shot in the chest by a young female fan in 1949, critically wounding him. The incident is said to have inspired the Bernard Malamud novel, The Natural, released 3 years later.
Good luck kentol. Maybe Waitkus will turn out to be another Roy Hobbs!
