I probably like him a bit more than Brian and damag. Nonetheless, i mostly agree -- try to trade him during the next six seasons. I say six seasons because, in my opinion, I think he overplays 3b through his aged 31 season. So, I would not trade him unless you get a nice package. I think he is too expensive to pay him nearly $10MM a year, but it is nice to just place a guy at 3b,2b or RF and just forget about him.

+1.

It's players like him that drives me nuts that salary is tied to overall ratings.

Can someone tell me how many games a service time of 0.055 equates to? I am trying to figure out how many games to hold him back to save a year of future arbitration.

Will declining a mutual option and buying out a player result in a Type A/B compensation if that player is worthy?
11/19/2020 11:52 AM
No if you decline the option you won’t get a comp pick.

55 days; days, not games, is the relevant metric.

So this means he has to hold him back 75 days to gain the extra season of control right?

Correct, remembering that the major league season starts a couple of days before the minor league season so it might be 77 or so.

What is everyone's opinion on the trade value Type A or B picks (assuming both HS and Col scouting are maxed out).? Assuming you are trading an elite talent and what level of prospect would be able to be substituted for a player that is likely to yield a type A or B pick and is likely to be signed?

If you need an upgrade at the MLB level for one season and the price is right (i.e. you're giving up guys that probably would not have played on your MLB squad), it makes sense to trade for Type A's or Type B's. With the being said, what you get back for the Type A & Type B is a total crapshoot. If the draft pool is not very deep, you won't get much back. However, if the draft pool is average or better, you should get some MLB talent with your comp picks. I have had both great luck and poor luck with Type A and Type B comp picks.

One thing to also consider is if you are participating in Intl as well. Sometimes when you are participating in Intl and have comp picks in the draft in the same season, you spend a tad bit too much in the draft and that may result is missing out on a top player. This has happened to me a few times -- I had multiple comp picks that I spent a couple extra million on and then missed signing a top Intl prospect by less than 2 million.

The other side of this transaction is simple -- if somebody is trying to acquire your Type A or Type B picks, be certain that you get back at least what the pick is worth. And since you are holding the player, always point to the best examples of who you can get with your Type A or Type B. Don't give them up for next to nothing. Make sure you are getting a MLB piece.

It all depends on your scouting imo. I love the draft and have always strived to load up on comp picks. I used to run just 20 on one side, and with that you can generally get an MLB player with a comp pick. Now I’ve started running 20/20 and you can really pick up some good players. Especially bullpen guys or catchers/DH’s with lower overalls.

It also depends on the type of Type A/B player. I generally put them in 3 categories:
1. No doubt sign-ability - anybody would sign this guy, including teams that would give up 1st rounders
2. probable signs - teams might not see it worthwhile to give up a 1st, but someone will most likely sign him. You might just get a later pick.
3. Fringe signs - Most of time these are former DITR relievers who eat a lot of innings but nothing else. Serious risk that someone will sign him (note: I’ve seen multiple teams song Type A guys during a rebuild with the intent of flipping them next year. So these guys might be a target here. I run this strategy as well during a rebuild).

I thought about going this route -- 20/20 HS and College scouting. I especially thought about it in some of the Worlds where the amount of $ it takes to sign an average Intl guy is ridiculous. However, every time I thought about it, I convinced myself that if you do both HS and College in the draft, you end up competing with yourself (i.e. you don't see as many HS guys as you would have if you had just 20 in HS scouting or you don't see as many College guys if you would have if you had just college scouting). Have you found this to be true since you switched over?
11/28/2020 8:15 PM
Tlowster talked about this in a TC, but I was able to determine you do not compete against yourself with 20/20. Since HS scouting can give you around 200 scouted players and college 500 I would expect a pool of 700 or so, with the 500 best showing on my draft board. If you go to the Amateur Results Screen it shows you where on the draft board each selection was ranked. In my most recent draft I had a couple guys in the 500/600 range and one in the 800s. The 500/600 guys were scouted, but just had overalls that missed the top 500 cut. The 800+ ranked player was a ??? meaning he wasn't scouted at all. So I would expect I had a total of 700 or so guys scouted, with about 200 not showing on my board.
