An attractive performance by a very young Arsenal side led by Andrei Arshavin at Fratton Park today. There was an element of luck to our first two goals, where Bendnter nodded a catchable header through David James' mitts and then converted a soft penalty after Sean Davis was deemed to bring down Arshavin in the box.

What was indisputable, though, was the outstanding quality of our build up play that led to those two goals and several excellent chances.

Pompey switched to a 4-3-3 to start the second half and created a couple of great chances to get back in the game, with Peter Crouch and John Utaka guilty of squandering great chances. Carlos Vela showed them how to finish after a beautiful flowing move.

What this performance by an Arsenal side featuring a makeshift back four that featured only one regular starter (Sagna) a midfield with 18-year-old Aaron Ramsey playing in the creative role and a partnership of Vela and Bendnter suggests is the dire quality at the bottom end of the table. Pompey are not yet out of the relegation scrap and lost at home to a youth side. Anybody who suggests the Premier League is the best in the world needs to look past the Big Four. It's not pretty.

That's a good point, I would easily contend that teams like Getafe and Osasuna of the Spanish Primera; or Siena and Sampdoria of Serie A could play and defeat teams in similar positions in the Premier League

ok - i'll play this game

1 - Manchester United v Barcelona v Inter Milan = Manchester United
2 - Liverpool v Real Madrid v AC Milan = Liverpool
3 - Chelsea v Sevilla v Juventus = Chelsea
4 - Arsenal v Valencia v Fiorentina = Arsenal
5 - Aston Villa v Villarreal v Genoa = Villarreal
6 - Everton v Atletico Madrid v AS Roma = Everton
7 - West Ham v Malaga v Cagliari = too close to call
8 - Manchester City v Deportivo La Coruna v Palermo = Manchester City
9 - Fulham v Mallorca v Lazio = too close to call
10 - Tottenham v Valladolid v Udinese = Tottenham
11 - Wigan v Atletico Bilbao v Atalanta = Atletico Bilbao
12 - Bolton v Almeria v Napoli = too close to call
13 - Stoke City v Racing Santander v Sampdoria = Racing Santander
14 - Portsmouth v Real Betis v Catania = Real Betis
15 - Blackburn v Osasuna v Siena = Osasuna
16 - Sunderland v Espanyol v Verona = too close to call
17 - Hull City v Getafe v Torino = too close to call
18 - Newcastle v Sporting Gijon v Bologna = Newcastle
19 - Middlesbrough v Numancia v Lecce = Middlesbrough
20 - West Brom v Recreativo Huelva v Reggina = awful choices

the problem is that the big 4 are so good, it makes the other teams look like lesser sides than they actually are - in Spain, the top 2 dominate, then about 10 teams are very similar - and the same goes in Italy (top 3) - with Roma having an awful defensive year, Italy is clearly not in the caliber of the other 2 leagues

i would say it's the Premiership by a bit over La Liga, and for the most part it is Substance over Style - the physicality vs the finesse

i would love to see a home and home series from top to bottom among the 2 leagues after the season - and i would love to see what the bookmakers would put these games at

I agree the top teams tend to dominate and Italy is having a down year this year. But even with that, Chelsea struggled with Juventus. The gap isn't that big, particularly if you are looking at a one-off match or a two-legged tie.

I've seen enough of Spain, Italy and England this year to disagree with most of your choices Rob on your top 20. The bottom half in England are utterly dire. Perhaps this comes from parking the bus and playing Graham Taylor hoofball, but they are technically and tactically well behind their counterparts on the continent.

Outside of the Big Four, I'd probably give West Ham the nod over their Italian and Spanish counterparts. Everton and Villa are close. That's about it. Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool are clearly superior to their respective competitors. I'm not yet ready to write off Barca yet.

not sure you read my post correctly - you say you disagree with most of my choices - but it seams like you agree with most of them

if i combined them into a top 20

1 Manchester United
2 Liverpool
3 Chelsea
4 Arsenal
5 Villarreal
6 Everton
7 West Ham (if i had to pick)
8 Manchester City
9 Lazio
10 Tottenham
11 Atletico Bilbao
12 Napoli
13 Racing Santander
14 Real Betis
15 Osasuna
16 Espanyol
17 Getafe
18 Newcastle
19 Middlesbro
20 none

so of the 15 spots outside the top 4, not including 20th - 7 are from La Liga, 2 are Serie A and 6 are from the Premiership

which would you disagree on?
5/3/2009 12:15 PM
Personally, I'd put Recreativo at the bottom of your list..
5/3/2009 12:29 PM
yeah, Brom and Reggina are effin awful
5/3/2009 12:55 PM
Actually most of them are the same. I've seen the bottom table teams in Spain give a much better account of themselves against Barca and Real Madrid than the the bottom of the table do against the Big Four, the one exception being Newcastle's draw with United early in the year when King Kev was still in the dugout. But yeah, we agree on more than not. In general, I think English clubs are strong at the top, mid-table Italian clubs are better and Spain has much stronger sides at the bottom of the league.

1. Barca or United
2. Liverpool
3. Chelsea
4. Arsenal
5. Genoa
6. Everton or Roma
7. West Ham
8. Palermo
9. Lazio
10. Udinese
11. Bilbao
12. Napoli
13. Racing
14. Real Betis
15. Osasuna
16. Espanyol
17. Getafe
18. Sporting
19. Numancia
20. Recreativo

A good performance today against United against Old Trafford. While we dominated play for long possessions, we never looked like scoring so the result was a fair one. And, as much as it pains me to say this, United deserve to be champions.

nice signing with the Belgian defender - Vermaelen, he could be a good one

6/23/2009 12:48 PM
Wenger says his new priority is keeping the current squad together and it looks like Robin van Persie is set to sign a new 70k per week deal, which is fantastic news. Maybe one more signing -- we're linked with that Brazilian holding mid Melo, who looks like a cracking player.

Rob, what do you think of Toure leaving to Man City?
7/29/2009 8:22 PM
Toure sale suggests Wenger has made his decision in the feud between his central defenders and has picked Gallas. Given Kolo's inconsistency last year (and a belief in the club that he has slipped since contracting malaria in 2008 and won't get back to his peak), that's understandable. Moreover, 15 million pounds is excellent business. As for a replacement, I suspect Wenger will look at Sakho of PSG, Bassong or perhaps shift Alex Song back as a central defender. All are at least six feet tall and fit the technical and athletic profile sought by Wenger. We'll probably see more of Djourou as well and he did make good strides.

Wenger will have 40 million pounds from the sales of Toure and Emmanuel Adebayor as well as substantial savings in wages and I suspect the board will let him spend on replacements. If that happens, I suspect we'll see a central midfielder come in to challenge Denilson or Song (assuming he doesn't get shifted backwards).

The bigger challenge is Arsenal will need to reinvent how they attack without Adebayor at the point of the spear because our supporters, who have hailed his sale, were either too clueless to understand his role or too blinkered in their hatred of him for his dalliances with other clubs. And they've erased his scoring record in Champions League from their memories. That said, 25 million pounds was tough to turn down. If he's a change-room malcontent at Arsenal, where he had a guaranteed starting spot, one wonders what could happen at City.

So we'll have to change because I don't see Bendnter assuming Ade's role as a hold-up line leader on full-time basis, more as a second option off the bench. It may mean a return to the system employed with Henry, where RVP or Eduardo acts as the lead striker. Rather than play up top, they'll probably drift to the or right and try to draw out defenders out wide and try to beat them or look for midfielders to arrive late.

i think the first choice team by mid season will be

GK Manuel Almunia
LB Gael Clichy
CB Johan Djourou
CB Thomas Vermaelen
RB Bacary Sagna
LM Tomas Rosicky
AM Cesc Fabregas
CM Denilson or Song
RM Theo Walcott
WS Andrey Arhsavin
ST Robin Van Persie

i just dont see Gallas lasting all season - Senderos is back and altho he has seen some time in a defensive mid role, he doesnt have the pace for that and Vermaelen is a good player

i know they still want a defensive mid, but why not just slot Denilson there?

Arshavin as the support striker (the role he plays on the russian national team for Pavluchenko) is a perfect fit - it remains to be seen if RVP can lead at the top - i sure hope so

i like Bendtner as a late sub for RVP (Bendtner's strike rate was almost the same as Adebayor's last season) - and Eduardo could also come in late when needing a goal, slotting Arshavin back and pulling off one of the midfielders

i think this team is deeper than most do, especially if everyone is healthy
