Because it is helpful. If you have a few drafts going on, or are busy working while playing some games, it's easy to lose track. Since it takes less than 30 seconds to send a sitemail, it's just a courtesy to one's fellow owners and can prevent someone from missing out on a player he might have wanted.
EDIT: I just timed it for the heck of it. Took me 21 seconds to go from this page to the first, copy the three picks after my next one, go into sitemail and send a note.
i still think its just another reason to *****
Maybe there's less going on in your life than some other people... Between my standard coursework and grad school apps, I don't have much spare time right now and somehow I'm supposed to be making 8 mins. Remembering a draft that had just started is not something that's liable to happen...

Not to disagree with the overall message of your post, but it only takes about 25 seconds to go from your homepage to WIS to the Live forums to this thread, and check the front page and last page to see if it's your pick.

Hey man, I didn't mean for you to take any offense. I'm just saying that right now things like this very easily slip my mind. More concerned about keeping up with everything, writing my term papers, finishing applications, getting ready for the chemistry GRE which I had this morning, etc... Everybody gets swamped sometimes, and if they only have time to hop on the site for a few seconds they're pretty likely to notice the flashing green envelope. I do appreciate the fact that everyone is pretty busy, perhaps additionally so due to the trouble with the economy.
