Brewers : Back in First Place Topic

As expected, Brewers announce they will not pick up 2011 option on Grandpa Ken's contract.

Ken was gracious in his final presser.

Brewers will likely(?) look for a younger manager better able to relate to their young roster. I guess. Pluswhise a younger, inexperienced guy will presumably cost less than Joe Torre.

Please promote Willie.  And hire Jerry Manuel as a bench coach.  As a Mets fan, that would be humorous.

I don't think there's any chance they promote from within.. they had plenty of opportunity to do that during the season.

Local speculation seems to be centered on Bob Melvin (who interviewed for the job when Yost was hired in '02) and former Brewer Pat Listach.

If I had to bet, I'd bet on Melvin. Doug loves hiring guys he's interviewed before.

I'm going to apply.   I'll be cheap except I'll request that they supply me with a private plane so I don't have to live in WI.   Even during the season.

I think I said "better able to relate" not "better able to alienate".

I seldom read what you post.  I was just making my limited interest in the job known.

I love love love that the Journal Sentinel ran a story about Macha's lack of connection to Braun and Fielder under a huge picture of Macha yawning in the dugout.

Doesn't Torre have a Milwaukee connection?
10/5/2010 6:52 PM
I think he played for the Milwaukee Braves about 45 years ago LOL.

He probably likes beer, too.

Interesting that the team hailed for its chemistry during the playoff run in '08 when Cameron and CC were here is now being portrayed in an entirely different light by the local media. Braun and Fielder in particular are being criticized for their lack of leadership (Braun being described as a "ghost" in the clubhouse) and setting a horrible example for the young kids coming up (disrespecting the manager, etc.)

Throw in Trevor Hoffman, who apparently threw a hissy fit when removed from the closer job and wouldn't talk to Macha for months, and you've got a manager doomed to fail. (Of course, he was doomed to fail with this pitching staff anyway, so maybe it's just as well).

Bob Melvin has confirmed that he will interview for the Brewers' job next week. GM Doug Melvin told the Journal Sentinel that he has interviewed four candidates already while in Arizona for scouting meetings, but would not identify any of the candidates. Angels coach Ron Roenicke is thought to be one of the four, along with former Indians manager Eric Wedge and Dodgers AAA manager Tim Wallach. Some sources are reporting the Brewers might be interested in Bobby Valentine, though it is hard to imagine that Bobby V would be interested in them.

Former Brewer star and 1982 ALCS hero Cecil Cooper has expressed his interest in the job, but the Brewers seem to be intent on cutting ties with the stars of the '80s.

Meanwhile, both Ken Macha and Dale Sveum have interviewed for the Pirates' job.

I have yet to be contacted.

I think you might need to call Doug. He doesn't seem like he's aware of who might be available.
10/14/2010 11:27 AM
I just assumed he followed your thread.   Are you saying he doesn't?
