I usually carry two SS so I can try to avoid playing 20 or so games with a deensive liability when I rest the starter, preferably my starter has a good vR split and the other good vL.

Does this make sense or am I wasting a roster spot when I could just sub in another MIF who's maybe not quite up to 85 D ratings across the board as a fill in for 10% of my games to keep the starter 100%? Then I can use that spot on something else.

Makes sense to me. I usually carry 2-3 SS on my team. When you use defensive replacements when you are late in the game and in the lead, having a player less likely to cause an error and more likely to make a plus play can make the difference in winning and losing.

I missed out on the final coaching cycle and got a guy with 72 hit rating. He has good patience at 88. My AAA coach is at 84 and 41.

Question is, if I promote Player Profile: Brady Andriese - Hardball Dynasty Baseball | WhatIfSports or some other hitters, will I stunt their growth? Maybe not Andriese since he is in his 4th season but maybe Player Profile: Arquimedes Rosado - Hardball Dynasty Baseball | WhatIfSports?

I'm not all too pleased as I was leading the entire time with a ton of money, way beyond what other had traditionally spend on hitting coaches, and then lost out in the final cycle. Then I missed signing anyone else as a result and got the scraps despite having $5MM extra in the coffers.

I don't believe that'll hurt your major league hitters. Might not get 'em any better though. 72 Hitting/Pitching rating is about the equivalent of most AAA coaches or a major league 1B-3B/Bullpen coach. Think of the guy as a one-season placeholder.

But won’t they grow more with the 84 coaching in AAA?

Sorry yeah I missed that part. I'd probably leave the prospects at AAA.

To me it depends if I needed him at the ml level in order to win.

Where does everyone draw the line between wasting money and a waste of money? I have about 24 million in player payroll available for one of my teams this year. I can already see the free agents that I was targeting going for way too much even if I offer a huge bonus in the first year. So, which is worse, getting stuck with a potentially bad contract or losing out on 10+ million for a season?

Id rather lose the 10 mill. Unless the signing can win me the ws. I also look at if I feel the player is tradeable later or possibly even a target on waivers to help rid me of the contract. All of this versus the cost involved (salary + comp pick). Lots of variables. If its a pitcher its pretty easy to know what they will look like at 38 years old.

What happens to drafted players that don't sign? There is a team in my world that doesn't have enough money to sign some of his draft picks, some of them being college seniors, just curious if they will roll over to the next year as free agents of some type or are they retired and never to be seen again?

Some of them become minor league free agents next season. If you search minor league pitcher and catcher free agents, and sort by age, most of the 23 year olds will be unsigned draft picks. Player Profile: Houston Pelfrey - Hardball Dynasty Baseball | WhatIfSports is an example.

If they are "looking to sign" they will show up as free agents the following season. If they think they have other options (eg, "might play pro basketball" despite being 5' 8" and having speed = 19) then they will take those "options" and disappear from the world completely.

Is it true that players will always sign long-term in their arb3 year? For example, I have this guy who wants $12.5m in arb2 or $11.5x4 on a long-term deal. Is there any risk in taking him to arb this year and then locking him up for another 4 or 5 years after that?

Wow. Heck of a player. You can take him to Arb twice and then sign him long term with no penalty. Just make sure to sign him long term. If you Arb him a third time you are screwed.

Following up on this, I decided to do something I said I would never do in HBD and signed a player to a $20 million X 5 year contract. Right now I'm living large with Gregory Carpenter looking like an MVP on one of the best teams I have ever built. I'm not too concerned as even when his contract is up he will only be 31. Its just daunting to spend that much money on one player.
