fight the power that be
4/9/2010 9:44 AM
My feelings:

I don't have a problem (even support) WiS setting out clear guidelines for dumping a mid-season tanker. But this rollover business has to be changed. Some have said that the Commish must have full authority to remove an owner at rollover at will. I'd settle for the Commish having the power to remove an owner for violating written World Rules. I get that discretion can be abused by a Commish, and that WiS doesn't want to deal with owners who are removed for random reasons. And a disclaimer will not keep anybody from complaining just as loudly when they get booted. But written rules will.

My suggestion: Any protest have at its core this simple, very specific change: In the phrase "no exceptions, even for private worlds at the start of a new season", change the word "even" to the word "except". This, it seems to me, fixes everything we've been talking about, and because it is specific, it prevents WiS from giving us some token change without really giving the Commish back his powers.

I hate the new guidelines for all the reasons mentioned already, but there's something I found to be funny and to my knowledge, no one has mentioned. They set the arbitrary bar at .250 win% or 40.5 wins (so win 41 and your safe), but in their own example WIS said this:

"For instance, it's no more difficult to field a healthy team in Hardball Dynasty that can win 50 games than it is to field a team that can win 30 games"

Quick math shows that equates to .309 win%...what kind of sense does that make? By their own example, 50 wins should be achievable with relative ease, so they set the bar lower because...??? I mean the new guidelines and policy set forth by WIS is borderline mental retardation.

One last thing: The way I read this, I'm not 100% sure whether it definitionally invalidates all non-tanking-related rules for Private Worlds. It says that these are the only reasons an owner may be removed for tanking. I read that to mean that if, for instance, your World has a firm written rule about maximum salaries, that an owner can be removed at rollover for that violating that rule. This is because all of these rules are under "Fair Play". There are other reasons to remove someone from a World besides failure to meet Fair Play guidelines- i.e. offensive behavior on World Chat. Money quote in this regard: "And remember, an owner can be stripped of a team for other Terms of Service or Fairplay Guideline infractions."

As I read it, they have given commishes only 3 ways to get rid of a douche. Not 3 more.

What about if all 31 other owners make it clear they don't wish to participate in a league with a particular owner? Because that's what happened in Cooperstown.

The commissioner asked smoelheim not to come back, he ignored the request, Admin allowed him to remain and everyone but the commissioner it seems has already dropped out or plans to do so.

The problem is private leagues have rules. They have established certain rules for reasons. A lot of the rules in place are to combat "tanking" since WIS has never been and still isn't serious about removing tankers. So if leagues have certain rules in place to combat tanking and then you tell those leagues that they can only remove suspected tankers for the 3 reasons WIS posted, then you have basically just told those private leagues what they can/can't enforce

All unique league rules are now voluntary!

If the rule can't be enforced, then compliance is voluntary.

if the rule can't be enforced, then the rule is not a rule

The entire problem with written "rules" for entrance into a world is that owners will "work" them. Neither owner I asked to not return would have violated any win rule in place. However, not one owner in Cooperstown came to their defense in the week of public back and forth between us. Because everyone knew the two owners were "failing to compete" despite their win totals. As I mentioned earlier, a team can be 41-59 at game 100. They are not playoff teams. Now they can go 0-62 to close out the season and, as long as they check in and start Training Camp pitchers at 51% once every 10 games, they cannot be removed. No exceptions.

If a commish "unfairly" has an owner removed, the rest of the world will take notice. And talk with their feet. Bad commishes will be weeded out quickly.

I don't even know how many commishes ask for WifS to remove owners. I've asked twice in my 30someodd seasons as commish. Is this even worth a rule?

This really makes me sad. I'm relatively new here (8 seasons) but I was just feeling comfortable enough to jump to the private realm. And now I don't see much of a point in doing so, or reupping with the franchise I've spent 8 seasons rebuilding in Ryan World.

This sucks.

i'm surprised admin hasn't chimed in here. apparently they don't really give a **** about their better customers. more willing to take money from tankers and noobs. i would not expect a resolution to this guys.
