two seasons in a row I get to screw a different commish. ermocito has McCovey at 1st, Jim Ray Hart at 3b and maybe a decent Willie Mays plus good pitching on the 67 Giants. So, Ok, I'll give him the 77 Giants with, um, McCovey at 1st, a couple of mediocre OFs and maybe one or two ok pitchers. I'm not saying there might be a good dagger pick here, but...good luck commish and you are up.

seay00 has excellent options with the 1927 Yankees beyond the unaffordable Gehrig and Ruth. The SP is particularly strong, and 2B is serviceable.
The 1937 Boston Bees were not completely terrible, but the SP is a step down the only playable offensive players are at 2B and OF.
I guess Gene Moore is a playable OF to replace Babe Ruth, but I would be stunned if you can't find a 3rd OF in round 3 or round 4.
The cheapBee battters are 3B and OF, pretty much the same as those Yankees.

Alright calhoop. You really did an outstanding job with the pitching on those '57 Orioles, but they need some bats badly. So naturally, I started looking for more pitching and no hitting for you. I landed with the 1977 New York Mets. You will get a good one at the hot corner. Randle has everything you want in a player, but the rest of the lineup is completely and wonderfully inept. In fact, there are only 3 guys on the team with over 500 ABs. Steve Henderson would be great with 600 ABs. Sorry about that. A bunch of platooning OFs that are too expensive to be bench players. Maybe you could downgrade the good Orioles catcher to John Stearns. That'll pack in the fans and make 'em smile. There is Jerry Koosman as a starter, but you don't really need more of those. And he will cost you 6 million. Rounding out the gaggle of Metropolitans pitchers is nothing usable except maybe Skip Lockwood in the pen- not really a closer type and he costs over 3 million. He will eat 1-2 innings after your starters get tired. So there's that.

Good luck this year buddy. I look forward to facing your sweet hitting lineup.

Going to give whalers10 the 1967 Washington Senators.

Brutally bad hitting team but no middle infielders under $1mm. Some decent pitching by Neighbor League standards but this team structure is pretty similar to the 1967 Twins you picked in round 1, except not as good, except at catcher, where your Twins both hit .165.

Round 2 is in the books! Completed in just a couple of days!
Round 3 goes in reverse order, and the order is still determied by the sabotee.

So whalers10, I searched for a special treat. Something to compliment the great find of those '67 Twins. Coming in on today's countdown at numero two- zero is the 1957 New York Giants. Whatta say? The say hey kid is your prize! Or is he? Will be tough to land Willie on the final roster, I mean, if you do have that option at 9.5 mil. There is always Hank Sauer as a fallback choice. He does have a little pop, but you'll need to spend more there too to get 162 games out of that OF spot. The SS Spencer could be an everydayer if you have no alternatives. Nothing under 926K for the bench dudes.

For the pitchers, well you'll need to fill that up with your other squads. A couple durable starters with Gomez and Antonelli, but they dig them some long ball. And their overall numbers are just a downgrade when looking at those ERAs, Ks and BBs. Grissom looks serviceable in the pen, and you do get some cheap bench arms that are equally terrible and lethargic-- they will get tired just looking over at the on deck circle. Just tell dem boys.... Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the starches!

Coming in at 19, calhoop has previous hits with the Orioles and the lowly Mets. Combined, these two selections are strong at 1B & OF, fairly deep at SP if you include tandem options, and notably short at 2B and SS. But, all the cheap players are 3B and SS. I was particularly attentive to cheap players in case calhoop decides to start someone at a seconday position, because cheap primary options are important to that sort of hot shot debut.

With the worst of the worst off the boards, I started by looking at the worst teams remaining. Both of those had servicable 2B. I can't go for that....no can do.

Filtering the worst remaining 2B/SS combos, a few options were available. But several also had cheap options at 1B and 2B. That's your problem to solve, and not a place I want to assist. But the cheap batter on the 1977 California Angels is a catcher, and he's only 300k cheaper than a backup you already have.

It's a tough choice because it does give you some great SP options - but you have that now if you are willing to spend the money. And the Angels great SP options are not cheap either.

Ultimately, the constellation of cheap players and weakness in the IF keeps the Angels from debuting in a higher position!

Ryan only walks about 6 per 9 innings, too. That's not bad!

I had a hard time finding a team that was bad enough for seay00. Every team had something he could use. In the end, I just had to make sure he didn't get a decent 1B option. The 37 Reds have a few lower salary guys but no one that will improve his team at any position so I'll have to live with that.

I am going to give jpeterso the 1937 Chicago Cubs

They are just a good fit for his 1977 Big Red Machine (with very little pitching) and 1927 Cleveland Indians (less pitching)

These 1937 Cubs have very little pitching to offer, as well, but the thing I like best about their staff is that there are only 8 pitchers and only one under $2.3mm (and that one is over $1.2mm)

In fact, only 20 total players load for this team and you still need to take at least 6.

11/26/2023 4:32 PM
3dayrotation, your 57 Yankees and 77 Padres give you combined 5-6 decent pitchers, one totally unaffordable Mickey Mantle, a couple good catchers, a few good outfielders, a strong but pricey SS, a solid 1B, some 3B pieces that might fit, and some really awful 2B. Also, between these teams you have no backup SS available or a backup C under $1.6M.

So my goal was not to improve your pitching or your 2B situation, give you a cheap backup C, or give you any kind of backup SS. The less flexibility you have, the more cash you have to waste later and the harder it is to find a 4th team to fill all the holes and also dodge daggers.

I thought about gifting you some truly awful team that maybe filled some of those holes. There are still a few out there, and I'll probably be sobbing over one of them soon enough. But instead I'm sending you a team that looks kinda good at first, one I've had my eye on for these rounds since the outset.

Meet the 1977 Minnesota Twins.

They have one pitcher worth rostering, a 20-win Dave Goltz with 300+ innings. He's not anything great, even if he makes your roster though, with an ERC# north of 3 and a 1.23 WHIP. That's a lot of innings of just OK to me for the low, low price of $7.5M. Only 9 pitchers in all, and only one is under $1M.

They have a couple of fantastic hitters in Rod Carew and the tragic Lyman Bostock. Alas, Carew costs over $10M so he joins Mantle in the unaffordable pile. Bostock runs you $6.9M, but if you also want your $7M shortstop you're gonna run low on cash pretty fast. There's also a solid OF in Larry Hisle who might wind up being your best hitter. Alas, I couldn't find a team with nothing useful. Oh, hey, did I mention they have a couple awful 2B, too? Yeah, you can have them. There's a below average 3B in Cubbage you might be forced to stomach, too.

Elsewhere, you have one catcher, Wynegar, who isn't as good as Berra or Tenace. No backup at all. You have one shortstop, Smalley, who can't hit. You could try to roster some of their bench players, but 3 of them are listed as UTIL and therefore can only be drafted as OF and can't play any positions well. Did I mention they're all over $1M, too? So with only 22 players available, you really start to struggle to figure out how to get 6 of these guys on the roster. I wish you luck!
