Flames Thread: Scoring is overrated Topic

I'm curious about the schedule this season.  Who made it up?  A pro oiler fan?   Seriously...

Flames come back from that road trip..Play the Wild Tuesday, The Wild play the Oilers Wednesday.  Flames play the Ducks Thursday, the Ducks are in Edmonton last night. Flames play the Kings tonight...guess what...the Kings play the Oilers tomorrow??  I took a look back at the schedule, before both teams look their extended road trips due to the World Juniors...This EXACT pattern exists??   Teams coming to Alberta play Calgary first then have to play the Oilers the next day..Why isn't that reversed sometimes..  Not exactly fair really.

Mind you it's not exactly like the Oilers are taking advantage of this..beating the teams because they are tired etc..But still..to be this lopsided..makes me wonder..

It's not just this year aginor.  This pattern has existed for several years.  How far back?  I don't know but I've made note of it for as far back as I can remember, I just didn't make public issue of it because of the "not wanting to appear like a complainer" thing.  My fellow Coast Guard Officers are well aware of it because they always bug me about it and they're mostly Canuck fans.  One guy is a Philadelphia fan and he tries to bug me about it by always telling me how his Flyers have a schedule that is so much tougher than ours, and then he laughs uncontrollably.

Hmmm...   You're not complaining IF you're just stating a fact AND can prove it.   Like I said, it's not like the Oilers are taking advantage of this.  Just seems odd that when they make the schedule somebody wouldn't notice this and at least try to even it out a little.  Considering dates the arenas are available etc and TV requirements etc etc etc, it's unlikely you'd be able to get it 50/50.  But least try to get it so it's not so lopsided.

Just an observation anyway..doesn't really surprise me.  I love hockey but have always felt the NHL is the most 'unprofessional' in the running of it's sport and league of all the professional sports...  This just another example of my point. 8-(

If you have a copy of the NHL Guide and Record Book from last year, you can check on it. Or from previous years before that.  I think that for team travel purposes, the schedulers simply put them into Calgary first and then up to Edmonton the next night (slightly less travel time the first day) without really thinking about the advantage that it gives the Oilers.

That being the case, I wonder how many similar things exist in the schedule?  Eg..do teams when making 'California' road trip always play those teams in the same order?  How about Pittsburgh & Philadelphia.....Toronto & Ottawa.....?    I've noticed that most often in trips into Western Canada teams play Vancouver last.  That's most of the time NOT always. That's okay cause it's understandable from a travel point.  But at least it's not everytime...

Anyway whatever...like I said just another example of how unprofessional the NHL is ran.

TEAMS COMING TO PLAY THE NY AREA TEAMS USUALLY PLAY THE RANGERS+ ISLANDERS 1+2ND THEN HIT JERSEY ON WAY OUT

USED TO BE MORE RANGERS FIRST, BUT TOO MANY TEAMS GOT HANGOVER "FLU" AFTER PARTYING IN MANHATTAN

NOTHING TO DO IN UNIONDALE OR SWAMPS OF JOISEY

Any league (any league be it professional or not) should try create a fair and balanced schedule.  While it is likely impossible to make 'perfectly' balanced etc, there should be at least the attempt get it as close as possible.  The other pro sports leagues do a pretty good job of this.  Why can't the NHL?

Like I said, the NHL does face some unique challenges..unlike Football and Baseball where the team is THE main occupant during the season and gets pretty much 1st call on dates,  A fair number NHL arenas do double time as homes for NBA teams.  Also since the season is in the winter there is more demand for 'concert' dates in these places etc etc etc. Also let's face more than the NBA, the NHL has to bow to pressures from TV.  With really no major U.S TV network deal, they have make the most of the 3 Canadian networks and minor U.S coverage they get.

Still there at least should be an attempt...but not surprising from my opinion, they FAIL here.  Sad really to see our great game being handled so poorly.

After watching a lot of the Juniors, the NHL has handled this game poorly in so many ways.. Major FAIL

Bring back clutch and grab and soft padding.. thats the only way you will stop the injuries.. quit messing around with hitting and fighting

San Jose plays Sat at Vancouver, Mon at Edmonton, Tues at Calgary.  I guess there is the reverse schedule this week.

Last week it was LA at Calgary Sat, at Edmonton Sun, at Vancouver Tuesday

As far as the Flames go, I think we should change our team name to the "Sunnydale Retirement Community"

Team motto: "Where your relaxation needs are fully catered to while approaching the twilight years of your professional hockey career"
