moy, a couple of things about the Panthers trade.
1. A young goalie has no value for them because they already have their goaltender of the future in Jacob Markstrom.
2. With so little depth in the system on defense, there is no way they give up their future top defense pair. Maybe, MAYBE 1 of them, but not both.
Dale Tallon won't take Versteeg just because he's a former Hawk. If there's one thing he did well in Chicago, it was trading (Versteeg for Brandon Bochenski, Tuomo Ruutu for Ladd, Wisniewski for Sami Pahlsson, etc...).
yeah - its definitely a long shot.
Couple things though.... One that Florida needs to get to the $30mil mark in payroll and they have $12mil to go. Carle (3.6mil, 26 years old), Versteeg (3.1mil, 25 years old), and Bob (1.75mil, 23 years old) would help. Florida would get 3 young players with upside and on short contracts so they could trade at the deadline, re-sign them, or let them go FA if they don't work out.
Two - Bob has 50 NHL games under his belt and 2 seasons under contract at $1.75. He's be a great alternative to Vokoun who is a UFA while Markstrom (who will be a stud) develops. Sergei should have trade value if he performs well in Florida so it would not be a terrible move.
Three - I really like Gudbranson, and you are right that Florida probably wouldn't part with both.... even with the 8th pick in the draft and a DMan Carle in return. I would either offer up another pick (although we don't have a ton, maybe a 2nd rounder next season) to get both players or settle for another Defensive prospect instead of Kulikov. Worse case scenario we only get Gudbranson and Oskars Bartulis is the 7th D-Man on the roster in '11-12. I'd be ok with that ;)
