colorblind79 accepts head coaching position at Maryland. Iowa searching for replacement...

-----------

Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

I finally got my dream job!

As an alumnus of Maryland (class of 2001), I've been looking to coach the Terps ever since I started in HD. Frankly, I didn't think I'd get the chance until oldresorter told me that he'd be heading to Kentucky, about six or seven weeks ago. I was upset that I couldn't qualify for the job last year, but luckily, nobody else could, either. I knew I had to produce a good run in the NT for Iowa to bump up from an A- prestige to an equal level to UMD.

Man, I'm really excited about being here. Now it's time to work for a National Championship in DI.

Oh, if you want to read my history as a DI coach...

hmm, looks like my Princeton thread has been deleted.

Well, here's me at La Salle and Iowa:

Coach:
Thanks again for accepting our offer. I really think you've made the right choice. I'm not going to lie to you and tell you it's going to be easy, but I think you have what it takes to put this program on the right path.

The expectations won't be that high your first couple of seasons, but once you've had a chance to get your own players in here, there's no reason that University of Maryland can't be a perennial power in the National Tournament.

Anyway, I'm glad your here - let's get started!

Welcome Aboard,
Pete Bailey
Director of Athletics, University of Maryland

Coach,
Pete Bailey asked that I drop you a line to introduce myself, so that's what I'm doing.

I've been here for a couple of years now - brought in by the previous coach - he was a great guy, players loved him but there's a lot of pressure to win here, guess he just wasn't cut out for it.

Anyway I'm sure in the interview they told you that we finished last season running a flex offense and fullcourt press defense but obviously we stunk as coaches or we don't have the right types of kids for those styles. I'm going with option #2. Let me know after you've had a chance to review the roster and tapes what kind of offense you think works best for us and I'll start preparing.

With recruiting starting up again, we probably need to get our act together so we know who to go after.

Looking forward to working with you,
Nicholas Park
Assistant Coach

congrats on landing your dream job. I use to play Maryland every season at Georgetown until OR . Would be interested in renewing that if you're up for it. I figure we'll be bumping heads on the recruiting trail at any rate. I'm just happy to finally have G'town's prestige up to the level to compete w/ Maryland, UNC, etc.. in the area. I've had to back off way too many recruits the last several seasons.
11/18/2008 12:28 PM
thoughts:

Okay, so we're losing Michael Dolan and James Hines. I intend to cut Chad Irvin and James Barbosa, for sure, and I might cut the other two freshmen. I have to decide whether this team can be salvaged in the next few seasons. Other than the rebounding thing, Davis isn't a bad prospect (though his FT shooting isn't great). King doesn't really have anything going for him except defense. The issue is that I won't be getting a ton of recruiting money this year, with only two openings. Iowa would have had a huge bonus from the Big Ten's crazy NT success. I don't even have any money right now to do the scouting stuff.

I'll be keeping the Flex and the Press.

If I don't cut Davis and King, I'll probably regret it in the long run. If I do cut them, I may regret it, too.

PG - Lindsey is very nice, but only with us for a year...Anderson's a good backup, and also only with us for a year.

SG - Lafrance is very nice and has some room to grow. James won't get a lot better with his WE, but he's already decent enough to play in the ACC.

SF - I'm obviously in need of some quality 3s. I'll have to recruit at least one. I think I may keep King as a backup.

PF/C - I consider these positions to be interchangeable, at least in terms of personnel and recruiting (I do generally emphasize rebounding a bit more in the PFs than I do in the Cs, as well as ballhandling and perimeter skills). Anyways, Zito is reasonably strong, Barbosa isn't athletic enough for major conference play and is being cut, Davis would be fine other than his rebounding but that is a serious problem, Braden is top notch other than his mediocre FT shooting.

Next year shouldn't be too bad, but the year after will be a mess with the current team. I guess it depends on my recruits. I'm going to stay local, cut two or three guys, or maybe all four of the freshmen and carry an extra walk on, so that I have more recruiting money next year.

The rebounding issue is such an Achilles' Heel for Davis that I really can't justify ever putting him in a lineup. I've got to cut him.

King has no offensive skills whatsoever and he's a bad fit for the Press. I dunno, I'm gonna have to sleep on his fate.

I think that's a good idea, taz. I just bought a 10-pack for UMD. It looks like the ACC won't be quite as tough as the Big Ten has been. We'll see, though, there are a lot of good coaches in the conference. If it turns out that after I build the program back up I still can't count on significantly better than 8-8 in conference play, I'm going to have to make myself a relatively cake OOC schedule, annually.

I might be able to live with King and Davis. They'll always be backups, but they're not awful. If I cut two and sign four here, we'll get into a 4-3-3-2 scholarship rotation, which is easy to move into a 3-3-3-3 (a structure that provides steady success in a BCS Conference school). If I cut four and signed five here, we'd be in something much more unbalanced. I think I should keep King and Davis.

I changed my mind about Davis - his rebounding is simply too bad to work at the level that we need, and without having the potential to improve considerably. He'll be fine for someone else, but I figured I'd try to sign four guys, redshirt one, and carry a walk-on. King will be fine as a backup for three years. Assuming, that is, that I sign a SF this year.

#62 PG, #271 overall, **; redshirting. I'll post the Future Star notes for Lee. He is very promising as a developmental recruit. I don't know how much he'll develop, but I think we'll see very significant improvement this year, and he should be ready to be a four-year starter in the ACC starting next season.

#25 PF, #101 overall, ****; no promises. William Noah is another developmental recruit. He won't be tremendously speedy or athletic, but he should do fine in those spots in the long run. All of his other position skills will get a quick boost, and he'll probably be starting as a sophomore.

#8 SF, #68 overall, ****; promised the start. I call signings like Jose Fernandez $120 specials. I promised him the start and some minutes, though he declined the minutes. I guess I could've signed him for $110 but whatever. I couldn't scout Puerto Rico, so I have no idea how Fernandez will progress, at the moment. I'll find out a few practices in to the season. If this were the pre-potential era, I would say that he's too slow, and I have concerns over his ballhandling, low post, and FT shooting. The thing is, though, that he could have really high potential in any or all of those areas, and nobody would know. Anyways, I desperately needed a cheap signing, and I was able to promise PT at the SF position, and Fernandez was at least the highest ranked guy I could get. The other highly ranked SFs I made promises to were whittled away by other high prestige programs, with money and closer to them. We'll see how he turns out. No guarantees.

I scouted Fernadez a couple of cycles in when I saw only Maryland on him, trying to figure out what he might be worth and if that would be better than the SF I signed and plan to redshirt; knowing you'd be limited on funds and were likely looking to avoid battles it gave me thought. In the end, I liked what I saw in my red shirt canidate better, and it wasn't going to cost me as much to land him as Fernadez potentially would. I was surprised that I got on his consideration list w/ just 3 evals. Eventually I informed of RS so I could get off his list and allow you to sign him quickly. Anyhoo, here's what I figured out from evals, good luck w/ him, hope he turns into an AA:

Low potential in Athleticsm, shot blocking, & LP

Average in speed (I think it said he could improve, but didn't say anything about improving greatly) & Free throw shooting

high in passing & PE.

I can post my 3 evals if you'd like.
