As you can see, he dropped from 78 to 73 between S13-S14. He came back.

I would imagine a ratings hit from injury could also change his mind.

If he gets injured, his ratings would drop immediately and perhaps his demands will change such that he would be willing to negotiate now.

If he then went through rollover, he could experience injury recovery over the offseason which might bring his ratings back up over whatever the magic threshold is for willing/not-willing to negotiate.

Perhaps he got injured during the offseason.

I had a 180+ day injury to a pitcher who wasn't pitching. Didn't appear in the game, got totally hosed. It was a right laugh.

It is really hard to say. I have seen these situations go for you and against you. I had one player state that he had been through arbitration three times with me and was going to test the market. The season ended and the league rolled and suddenly he became available. I had another player follow through on the threat.
