What compensation picks do you get for a Type A Free Agent?

I just took over a team and am trying to decide whether to sign my 27 yr old pitcher to a 3 yr $6 mill per yr contract or to let him go and get the draft picks.

thanks

If the pitcher is a top 3 starter, sign him. If not, take the picks and build.

#4 and #5 starter slots can be filled by top AAA starters if you are rebuilding.

He would be my number 1 starter. What actual picks would I get if I let him go?

Depends on who takes him. If it's someone with pick 1-16, you'll get a sandwich pick and their 2nd rounder. If they pick up 2-3 type A, you might get a sandwich pick and a 4th-5th rounder. 17-32 is their first pick plus sandwich(I think). Again, if they pick up 2-3 Type A, you might get a much later pick.

I never count on comp picks.

You would get the first (or second) round draft pick of the signing team, plus a pick in the supplemental round.

If the signing team is drafting in the top half of the first round (i.e. in the first 16 picks), you would get their second round pick. If they were drafting 17 or later, you would get their first round pick.

A couple of caveats: (1) if the signing team signs multiple type A's, then you might get their second, third or even fourth round pick; (2) if the FA doesn't get signed by the time draft lists are released, you don't get any compensation.

It depends.

If the owner that signs him has a protected pick (top 15), you will get a compensatory pick at the end of the 1st round and their next highest pick (most likely their 2nd rounder).

If the owner that signs him does not have a protected pick, you will get their 1st round pick and a a compensatory pick at the end of the 1st round.

In my experience, you can count on getting a compensatory pick and either a 2nd or 3rd round pick but you can hope you get lucky and land someone's 1st round pick.

One other thing to consider. If the owner who signs your pitcher signs a bunch of other Type As (a pretty common strategy), the non-compensatory pick you are assigned is based on the overall ranking compared to the other picks he signs. You could end up with a compensatory pick and a 4th or 5th rounder. This has happened to me several times.

Good luck.

Looks like I am Mr. Redundant Redundant. Was too busy writing to see that you both already responded.
