about two seasons ago, an established coach and myself had a recruiting battle for a kid. after recruiting ended, i found out why i was able to sign the kid. the other coach pulled the scholarship offer on signing day (3rd day of recruiting).

more background...
- the kid ended up signing w/ me on the 5th day of recruiting.
- even after the other coach withdraw the scholly offer, the kid kept considering the school according to FSS and replies from the kid when i contacted him (HV, CV, calls, etc...). hence, i thought we were still in a recruiting battle and spent unnecessary cash.
- at the time the scholly was pulled, i had at least 30 visits in (combo of HV and CV). i also had promised mins to him.


question:
does everyone agree with the current logic?
should a recruit still consider a school even after that program's scholly offer is withdrawn and never offered again?

in this case, the recruit was still considering the other program for 2 days after the scholly was pulled.

Sometimes they kick you off, sometimes they don't. It just depends on how much effort you spent. There has been times I had about 2 to 3k into a recruit and took the ship off and he went undecided. Other times he still considered me so I did inform of redshirt to fully boot him off so coaches don't think I've over spent.

I've noticed that, too. I feel the consideration should be dropped when the scholarship is withdrawn.

Just add a "Tell recruit you are no longer interested' button. Or something.

as long as you have a scholarship open, i think the logic works fine. i am not sure what happens when scholarships fill up, that should take guys off the list completely. but i think it is a strategic element to allow coaches to keep guys considering them into signings without risking them actually signing.

Well, having a recruit still consider you isn't neccesarily a bad thing.

I agree with the logic as long as a scholarship is available. If the team has spent enough, I dont see why sometimes a kid will still consider them.

think about it. your son (not sure if u have one :) ) is being recruited by only duke and unc. both schools offer him a scholly - full ride if he plays basketball. u had many visits with both schools.

then duke pulls their offer w/o notice. i bet your son wouldn't still consider duke no matter how much love duke showed at one point. unc would be your top pick w/o question.

also, would u or your son really care how many roster spots duke has open?

I think it should still be conisdered as well after the scholarship is pulled (as long as roster spots are open).

EXPLANATION

I have one spot open, have two players considering me. Recruit "A" is my top choice, recruit "B" is fall back.

I have put significant money into both "A" and "B" to warrant consideration, but would really rather have "A." I pull the 'ship on "B" for a cycle or two to make sure he does not sign. Why should I lose that credit instantly on him? Now, a cycle or two later, I find myself in a battle for "A." I am running out of money for the battle, so I decide to take my fallback "B" option. I reinstate the offer and he signs within a cycle or two.

glen, even after 1-2 days of the scholly not being put back on the table, the recruit was still considering that school.

why would any kid still consider a college that pulls the scholly out from under his nose especially when he has other schollys on the table?

jais - I am not talking about your specific situation. I am reflecting on your original question regarding logic:

So in answer to your broader, general question, YES, I feel a kid should still consider a school after they have pulled a scholarship offer, based on my position above.

NOW, you are asking a different question, and that question is..for how long a kid should keep considering a school after the scholarship offer has been removed. I did not attempt to answer that question, nor do I really want to. Because if I say 1 cycle, someone will say well why not two cycles after the scholarship has been removed, and so on.

If you pull the scholarship offer the recruit should stop considering you because you are telling the recruit you don't want him anymore and that would make the recruit not want to go to school anymore.

I do have a son and I feel like if there are two schools he likes and have shown interest in him, he would like to wait as long as possible to make the best decision.
