Help Me Understand Topic

I'm looking for help understanding what it takes to get a DI job. Before my last season at DII I wanted any DI job but couldn't get one. At that time my overall record was 200-99 with NT appearances in 4 of 8 seasons in DII. In my last 4 seasons, which, if I understand correctly, is what they primarily look at, I had 1 PSI and 2 NT's with 1 elite 8 appearance. It seems like I've seen other coaches, at the DI level, who's resume's weren't quite as strong over the last 4 or overall. What am I not understanding?

You need back to back NT seasons I think. That will do it, you were probably very close after your second year, but then the losing record in year 3 hurt.

You now have the longevity at D2, just need the success, although this was a good year.

Is it possible to jump from division III right to division I? I was thinking of moving up but every single div II school said it was a step backwards and I'm not qualified for any div I job. So if I stay put for awhile would I eventually be able to jump to div I?

No allan. You need D2 experience before making it to D 1.

It used to be possible a long time ago, but I think now that it's been made almost impossible to do.

yes it is possible, you need to have A LOT of wins (400+) at DIII. this past off season in Knight, I was eligible for about 75 or so DI jobs without DII experience, and without a ton of success in the DIII NT. Every DII job was a step back for me. I have 494 wins at DIII though, so that is what it takes

I'm pretty sure i was qualified to jump straight to D1 from D3 last year in Rupp. But it was only for jobs in the D range.

Billy G did it under gillispie1 in Tark. He jumped from Howard Payne (many seasons there, coming off a title, and a Final Four two years before that) to CSU, Northridge. I think it was D or D-. I personally think his goal was to jump from D3 to D1 with this account to get another notch in his belt of greatness.

I have never coached in DII - I jumped from Lawrence (A/A+ prestige, went about 250-125 in my tenure there, built up the program from a sim wasteland in 12 seasons, won the NT in my tenth season) to Vermont (D- prestige, Patriot League.)

So it's doable. If you coach at DII with some success, you can jump straight to a midmajor.

Yeah, I wish I could remember the coach and / or the team, but I remember a very successful coach in D3 Crum made the jump to a low level D1 team a few seasons ago.

It's possible to jump straight from D2 to a BCS conference, but it may require an extended stay with ALOT of success at the D2 level. I've done it a couple of times, but it was to the bottom feeder BCS schools.

With the three year run you had, I'd say that you could have made that move, had you wanted to. That's quite a resume!

Thanks for the input guys! Im just too fond of my program at Clarkson to wanna leave to a div II thats a step backwards. Eventually I wanna further my coaching career at the highest level but for now I just love my job too much.

Ahh......I just found out who it was I was referring to in my earlier post. Cyben5150 made the jump a few seasons ago in D3 Crum from Johnson St. (where he was very successful) to UNH.
