But if nobody was willing to trade for him, it's likely that nobody will be willing to claim him either. You may be stuck with his contract for the duration.
Don't demote, then waive him. If nothing else, you run the risk of having him take a ratings hit that convinces someone *not* to claim him.
If you just want to be rid of him, without paying his coming years, designate him for assignment, with waivers. That gets him on the WW at his current ratings. Also, mention the fact that he's on the WW in your World Chat, since the owner who might find him useful might be one of those who isn't very attentive to the WW mid-season.
If someone claims him, you're off the hook entirely (for the remainder of this season and any future seasons). If no one wants him for free (talent-wise) then once he clears waivers, stick him in AAA and start offering to foot some of the bill on this year's $$ in order to clear him from your payroll in future seasons.
Just don't release him.
