HD Weekend Gameday Topic

Hey, this is usc4life. I had this idea to bring forth a type of "College Gameday" post to HD, so this is what I came up with.Every week, I will choose 4-5 of the best D1 games that will be simmed on the upcoming weekend and give you a brief preview of them. Hopefully, this will be fun and rewarding to the coaches (and their progams) that are mentioned in these posts. So without further adu, let's get the first post rolling...*Note: I mean no offense to any coaches I pick against or fail to mention in any of my posts

Weekend of 5/29 and 5/30

Note: no games played on Saturday morning are previewed this week

Game 1: #4 Iowa (3-1) at #22 Jackson St. (3-1)

Storyline: The first game is the obvious one: the only matchup between ranked teams on Sunday. Iowa, coming off a tough loss against Texas, looks to get back on track against #22 Jackson St. [coaches: cheeznsweet vs options4]

Key Players:

Iowa SF Dennis Wallace averages 15 ppg, while shooting a solid 56% from 3 point land

Jackson St. PF George Chiaramonte averages 11 ppg, grabs over 7 rebounds per game, and shoots very effeiciently at 68%

Spread/My Pick: (Iowa +13) I give a slight advantage to Iowa due to their excellent perimeter shooting

5/29/2010 3:36 PM
Game 2: Texas A&M (3-1) at #12 Syracuse (3-1)

Storyline: A&M looks for their first win vs a ranked team this season, while Syracuse hopes that their homecourt advantage will propel them to a win [jreitz vs flyer1950]

Key Players:

Texas A&M: C Scott Jenkins averages 10.5 ppg and 8 rebounds, thanks to his spectacular 100 LP rating

Syracuse: PG Joseph Holman is the all-around point guard, putting up 16 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists per game

Spread/My Pick: (Syracuse +1) I have to pick Syracuse, due mostly to their strong homecourt advantage

5/29/2010 3:47 PM
Game 3/ UPSET SPECIAL: #10 Xavier (4-0) at Ohio St. (4-0)

Storyline: Ohio St. faces their first challenge of the season, while both teams look to remain undefeated [stmd vs wew621]

Key Players:

Xavier: SG Gary Schisler shoots 50% from beyond the arc, scores 17 ppg, and adds 3 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game

Ohio St: PG William Rutledge shoots an unbelievable 73% from 3pt range, which is why he scores 16 ppg; add 4.3 assists and you've got yourself a player

Spread/My Pick: (Xavier +2) I calling an upset here. Ohio State's offensive explosiveness makes it hard for me to pick against them, so I won't

5/29/2010 4:00 PM
Game of the Weekend: #14 Montana (3-1) at Stanford (2-2)

Storyline: The winningest coach in Allen history, cal_bears , looks to welcome another very talented coach, dalter, to Palo Alto

Key Players:

Montana: PF R. Williams leads the team in scoring with 15 ppg, as well as ripping down 6.5 rebounds per game. Did I mention he can shoot the 3?

Stanford: PF S. Brown puts up a respectable 10 ppg and 4 rebounds. Not bad for a freshman, right?

Spread/My Pick: (Montana +8) I expect this to be a close one, but the older, more experience Montana team will pull this one out

As the second weekend of the season arrives, so does the second edition of Weekend Gameday! Last week, i went 4-0 on my picks, including my upset bid of Ohio St. over then #10 Xavier.

This weekend is opening weekend for conference play! Since no games will be played on Saturday, all games featured will be played on Sunday morning (which makes my job easier). We'll take a look at 5 games from 5 power conferences...

In the next and upcoming WG's, look for expanded storylines and coach spotlights/interviews!

Weekend of 6/6

Game 1: #24 St. Josephs (8-2) at Charlotte (7-3)

Storyline: Charlotte is certainly one of the surprise teams of the year, seeing that they're 1 of only 5 simAI coached teams to be top 50 RPI. On the flip side, St. Joseph's (coached by zamiam) looks to add yet another impressive win to their resume, having already beaten two ranked teams (and experienced coaches) in back-to-back games to open their season. The main question heading into this one is how long can simAI coached Charlotte keep up the amazing pace?

Key Players:

Saint Joseph's: PG D. Ropp, who's #4 in the nation in scoring at 22 ppg

Charlotte: SF M. McGohan who puts up nearly 12 points and 6 rebounds per game

My Pick: In the battle between Man vs. Computer, I am obliged to give the victory to St. Joseph's and their star PG

Game 2: #9 Southern (9-2) at Jackson St. (6-4)

Storyline: In this battle between two very evenly matched teams, Jackson St. hopes to use evey advantage it can get to open up it's conference play with a bang. Having a roster loaded with upperclassmen and home court advantage should help coach options4 score his 2nd win verses a ranked opponent this season. Southern, riding a 7 game winning streak into conference play, looks to return to it's championship form from season 40 when umpikes led them to their first and only national title.

Key Players:

Jackson St.: SF M. Clifford who scores 12 ppg while shooting a solid 60% from 3 point land

Southern: PG M. Rosenfeld is a key piece to Southern's puzzle, putting in 8.7 ppg while handing out over 2 assists

My Pick: This game is going to be close, probably even overtime, but im calling upset here and picking Jackson St. by a hair due to their HCA

Game 3: Texas (6-4) at Oklahoma (7-3)

Storyline: Big 12 conference play opens with another installment of it's fiercest rivalry: Texas vs Oklahoma. UT has dominated the series, leading it 50-21, while coach viperhoops has had the upper hand over nickjyd. Defending champion Texas has been on a downslide lately, having lost 4 of their last 5 games this season. OU hopes that it's HCA can balance out their youth and help them steal a game in the Red River Rivalry.

Key Players:

Texas: SF W. Craig scores 13 ppg, grabs 4.5 boards, and shoots around 50% from both the field and beyond the arc

Oklahoma: Senior PF J. Lane is the total package. He leads his team in both points and rebounds, with 11 and 7.5, respectively

My Pick: Since I couldn't pick out a definite advantage for either team, I made my pick based on coaching. If viperhoops could lead his team to a national title, then he sure can lead Texas to a victory here

UPSET SPECIAL: #23 Arizona St. (10-0) at uSC (8-2)

Storyline: USC, one year removed from reeling in the number one recruiting class in the nation, hopes that it's youth will decide to show up against a solid #23 Arizona St. squad. During non-conference play, USC showed it's inexperience by following up a huge victory with a tough loss to an inferior simAI team. In other news, coach thorknight has never lost to Arizona St.'s powermad, with a 9-0 record (this may come in to play later on...)

Key Players:

Arizona St.: SF T. Janik is the Sun Devil's wildcard: he averages a team leading 12.4 points coming off the bench

USC: PF M. Jackson is the senior leader of this young Trojans squad; he averages nearly 19 points and 8 rebounds per game

My Pick: While home court advantage will cetainly help, the reason i'm picking uSC is because thorknight hasn't lost this matchup yet and seemingly has the answer to everything Arizona St. can throw at him

Game of the Weekend: #1 Virgina (10-0) at #14 Duke (9-1)

Storyline: Virgina, which is on a mission to prove the the fullcourt press is still a championship defense, finds themselves undefeated and #1 in the nation after non-conference play. Their first conference game won't be easy though- they'll have to play in front of the Cameron Crazies in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke, led by senior John Corbin, have won 9 in a row and have their minds set on taking down #1 Virgina. Will the Dukies 1st game versus a ranked opponent (much less #1 in the nation) be too much to handle?

Key Players:

Virginia: C L. Wright leads the Cavaliers in points and rebounds, all while playing less than 20 minutes per game

Duke: SG J. Corbin scores almost 20 ppg while shooting a over 50% from deep

My Pick: Both of these teams come in to the game playing at very high levels, with a combined 19 wins in a row. However, in a mathup this close, I have to side with the home team. Duke should be able to pull off this win, and in the process add more fire to the debate on HCA in the new engine

As I mentioned earlier, I want to add another "segment" if you will to the posts. So, in the upcoming weeks, i will be sending site mail to coaches throughout D1 asking for their comments on an upcoming game or their thoughts on the season. If you recieve an email feel free to reply and I'll let you know if you'll be featured on the next edition of WG. Hopefully, this will help expand the audience to this post.

Nice job, usc. Good stuff! I would suggest putting a brief post in the CC of the relevant conferences each week.
6/10/2010 2:35 PM
Good idea girt, maybe I'll try that
6/11/2010 5:14 PM
Here we are at the third weekend of the season, and we still have one undefeated team (Wichita St.) in D-I! Also, 8 one-loss teams head into the weekend looking to keep the pressure on the Shockers. With competition as close as it is, there are plenty of big games coming up, so without further adu here are the four best games this weekend has to offer...
6/11/2010 5:23 PM
Weekend of 6/12 and 6/13

Game 1: #1 Northwestern (15-1) at Indiana (11-5)

Storyline: Northwestern, the #1 team in the nation, will have a big target on their backs when they arrive in Bloomington. Indiana has only lost one game at home all year and they look to keep it that way. On the flip side, jslotman will try to lead his squad to a victory over the young, inexperienced Indiana team. All signs point to a Wildcat victory, but don't tell kevthekiddthat. He will need to use every trick in his bag to pull off this upset.

Key Players:

Northwestern: SG D. Lovett is a talented yet unpredictable player, who averages 9.6 ppg but can definately light it up. If he shows up to play on Saturday, it will be nearly impossible for his Wildcats to lose.

Indiana: Senior C L. Webb leads the team in both points and rebounds, but will need to play the game of his life to carry his team to an upset victory.

My Pick: call me crazy, but I think the Hoosiers have a fighting chance in this one. It will be close, but I pick Northwestern to survive a scare on the road.
6/11/2010 5:45 PM
Game 2: #3 Wichita St. (16-0) at Illinois St. (9-7)

Storyline: As mentioned before, Wichita St. is the last remaining undefeated team in D-1 and hopefully (for this post's sake) they can remain that way until their Sunday morning matchup against Illinois St. Coach joehuskie84 admits that "it would be great to beat an undefeated and top ranked team coached by a former NCOY" (he later said it would be even sweeter to beat a reinsel coached team), but it's easier said than done. The last time coach jason5 was around, he won the national title with Michigan St. After taking an extended leave of absense from HD, he has continued his streak of dominance and shows no signs of slowing down.

Key Players:

Wichita St.: All eyes will be on SF R. Flood, who leads the team in points with 17.5 a game and is a force defense as well.

Illinois St.: PG L. Bunker is the all around player that needs to show up big time on Sunday morning. His 12 points and 3.7 assists per game will be crucial to Illinois St's upset bid

My Pick: coach joehuskie84 knows that it will take "a Ray Allen game 2 perfomance to be even close" and while I won't take it that far, I will say that Wichita St. has the edge thanks to some great coaching
6/11/2010 6:09 PM
Game 3: #12 Brown (13-2) at #18 Princeton (14-1)

Storyline: The Ivy League (and the rest of the nation) will come to a complete stop and watch it's two best teams battle it out for conference bragging rights. Princeton comes into the game riding a 12 game winning streak and looks to win it's first game against a ranked opponent this season. While coach weirdrash acknowledges that Brown has "exceeded expectations", he has his own hefty expectations for his Princeton program- their first Final Four berth. His team will have it's shot at one of the nation's best to prove that it can meet those expectations.

Key Players:

Brown: SG J. Grisby averages 11.4 ppg and a team leading 3.1 apg. Whether or not he can perform under the huge spotlight is the key to his team's success.

Princeton: PG B. Olson leads his team in points, but coach weirdrash knows that it will take "a full effort from all of his guys" to win.

My Pick: In my mini-upset bid of the week, I pick Princeton to win a close one on their homecourt
