I usually have waiting lists.   I try to find out who's returning or who is not returning with about 20-30 games left in the season.   I tell potential new owners they have/don't have a team as soon as I get the final tally.  They pick their teams and we generally roll within the first few hours.  I've got a couple of issues this time.

1.  One owner initially said he'd be back.   Then he said he wouldn't.    Over two weeks ago, the "new" owners picked their teams.  His was chosen.    The original owner has asked if he could reclaim his team.    What's fair?

2.  Sometimes getting a response from current owners is like pulling eyeteeth.    A couple finally, after several TC/SM, said they were returning.  They have not renewed at this point and we should roll tomorrow morning.  Award their teams to those on the waitlist if they haven't renewed or repeat the process of finding out their intentions?

1.  Let the original owner keep his team, but with a warning: next time he waffles, he's gone.

2.  People need to be responsible for their own actions/inactions.  They've had 85 days to renew.  If they haven't renewed by the time you roll, it's their loss.

1.  Fair to the guy who thought he had a team?  And quite possibly DIDN'T join another world because of it?

Somebody's going to be unhappy no matter what you do.  If the current owner had been a good owner in the world, I'd give him preference.  But he's on notice.

I know somebody is going to be unhappy.  Them's the breaks.   But I want to be as fair as possible to all parties involved.
7/8/2010 5:36 PM
I say be as fair as possible to those who are responsive.

Active, attentive owners are the lifeblood of any league worth a damn.

I'm not sure there's a way to make everyone happy here, but I'd certainly be less inclined to **** off the responsive owners who WANT TO BE IN YOUR WORLD.

If someone's not sure, then they're not sure they want to be in that world.

Fair is being consistent.  Give preference to returning/renewing owners before rollover, new owners after rollover.  Unless it's "he who shall not be named", who delayed us by a week last time by his refusal to leave.

For the most part I agree with Tecwrg - if the * is up at the rollover and there is no other legitimate reason the owner should be vanquished it is his team to keep.  No * at the rollover, then you are taking your chances on losing the team.

Owners that do not commit the * and/or do not communicate are the bane of every commish.  Common courtsey says be honest and direct in your responses and get the * up.  If you are not forthright and the * is missing at the rollover don't be surprised, and don't b^tch, if someone else gets your former team.

Everyone, at least the three who've responded, seem to agree with the "Renew your damn team or STFU if you lose it" policy.   I've moved on before and I didn't feel good about it.    And that's my plan again.  I still won't feel good about it but I tire of the "What's your intention?" dance.   I feel a commish has a responsibility to 31 owners not one.

However, I think I disagree with those who feel an owner who says "I'll be back" one week, "No, I won't" the next and then, when his spot has been filled comes back with "I think I'd like to return" two weeks later should keep his team.   I think he's made a bed and now he has to lay in it.  I fully understand changing situations in the real world but there's no guarantee that they won't change again.   Once again, I think the commish has a responsibility to 31 owners not just one.

This comes back around to WIS policy on renewal.  If you can convince the waffling owner not to put his * up then it is an available team.  But if he gets the * up, regardless of how much he has waffled to that point I would be surprised if WIS removed him on the commishes request.  Unfortunately I think team selection by incoming owners has to be "tentative" until the rollover actually occurs and the team is vacated.
7/8/2010 6:21 PM
Yep. guy who waffled loses his team. tough ****. learn to make decisions like an adult.
7/8/2010 6:33 PM

Thanks, Mr. Obvious.   If he has an *, I certainly think it's a situation.    Not sure what WifS would do if the commish produced the "I'm not returning" sitemail.  They obviously like quick rollovers.  If they decided that owners can change their mind, commishes like me wouldn't allow potential new owners to even guess which teams might be available.  Essentially, I'd start recruiting much, much later in the season nor would I say "You have a team" to "reserve" an owner.  A decision like that creates a new dynamic in how worlds roll and how commishes recruit.

1. imho, team #1 now belongs to the new owner-you can ask the new owner if he'd be willing to switch to another open team, for the benefit of the league-if not, then the waffling owner is sol, and can have one of the open teams (or not)

2. give teams to those on waitlist if owners cannot commit by rollover
7/8/2010 6:48 PM

Welcome to the reality of WIS as most Commishes live it.  Why most of us feel we can not recruit early.  Why most of us are irritated with owners who will not put their * up early and do not/will not answer sitemail.  To often the * goes up just before the rollover or the sitemail comes in just after the rollover asking for the password.  We would all like owners who commit early and keep their word.  The core of most good leagues will do this.  Unfortunately, it seems most leagues have 2 to 4 owners at the rollover who do not.  We start advertising for 2 teams then find we really need 4 (after the rollover) because we do not want all the abusers back.

7/8/2010 7:04 PM
It's not my reality.    I don't think it has to be.  Recruiting is the key to all good worlds in my opinion.   Those who can't commit until the last minute are problems I'm not interested in having.  That's the good thing about waitlists.  If someone is willing to wait a season to join a world, they'll respond to sitemails.   That's why I'll shed no tears if #2 comes to fruition.  I won't feel good about it but I will move on and I won't have to deal with it next season.
