ABA/NBA Exclusive Rights Franchise League Topic

I love completely cloneless leagues.  Apparently I also like to propose leagues with ranked lists and drafts, but this is the league I would love to play, so here it is.

The ABA/NBA Exclusive Rights Franchise League

Cap: 37 mil
Clones: no
Rookies: no
WW: no
Seasons 1967-68 through 1975-76 (The ABA years)

Each player will select an ABA or NBA franchise.  Then there will be a draft.  You will only be able to select players who played on your franchise (For example, only the Virginia Squires and New York Nets would be eligible to select Julius Erving) and the season you select must be a season that the player played with your franchise.  The draft order will be determined by the franchise a player selects (see next post)   Whoever selects the Boston Celtics will have to skip the first round.  Whoever selects the Houston Rockets or Phoenix Suns will have 1 extra pick before the official start of the draft.  Whoever selects the Memphis Sounds will have 2 extra draft picks.

The draft will last as long as it needs to.  You will not have to draft players who did not play for any other teams besides yours; Russell is a Celtic, Gilmore is a Colonel...  You have to use any players that you draft, but if you make a mistake, you will be able to waive any players that you need to before the season starts, (and maybe send a site-mail to a couple of people.)

There will be up to 2 special teams; see the 3rd post.

There will be up to 2 special teams in the league.  They will be a composite of 2 teams and have an eligible season from each of the 9 seasons of the league.  It will have a team from list 1 and a team from list 2:

List 1

San Diego Sails A 4 1972
Buffalo Braves N 6 1970
Cleveland Cavilers N 6 1970
Portland Trailblazers N 6 1970

List 2
The Floridians A 5 1967
Pittsburgh Condors A 5 1967

You can select the first 3 seasons from a list 2 team and the 6 from list 1, or seasons from a list 2 team and the last 4 from a list 1 team.  These teams will be placed in the draft order according to win total of your selection.  The win total for the San Diego Sails will be pro-rated to 23 for the 1975-76 season.

appleseed trying to get my head around this.  So I chose a team and draft a player/year from the team.  Then why have a draft?  If  I have exclusive rights to that team likley that player will be exclusive too.  Especially during those years.  And how man rounds in the draft?  Considering some teams have extra pick so where do you go to fill out your roster?

Intriguing, but I'm trying to understand this.  Would this be a progressive league or a one-off?

I'm thinking a one-off, but there might  be follow-ups should the league prove to be popular.

The idea is that, for instance, Julius Erving played for 2 teams during this time period, so if you select Virginia, you will have to draft him.  (Perhaps making the Nets a bad choice?)   It is also hoped that having this draft will help to level the playing field.

The draft will last as long as it needs to and you can decline to draft/stop drafting any round you want to.  I will correct the 1st post to try to make that clear.  If you select the Celtics, you don't have to draft Russell; he didn't play for anybody else. (But you can only use his seasons after the 1967-68 season)

Seems bizarre and convoluted, but I love the idea of restricting a league to the player seasons you've identified.  I'll give it a try, if you can get it going.

moratorium on league start ups, sorry
8/3/2010 9:21 PM
Nah, this is exactly the kind of league that should starting up now.  It doesn't depend on 09-10 player seasons and it totally monkeys with team-building strategies that rely on obscene gobs of 3s.
8/3/2010 9:43 PM
so? why pimp for a dead ho? why give them 240$? exactly no leagues should be starting up now - zip, flat line, no business - that seems to be the only way

I'm in. I'll take the Celtics.

Ok main question how many rounds of drafting do we have?

Up to 12, but you don't have to draft any players who only played for your team for the years of the league, and so you can decline to draft after you have enough players; I can't imagine sweg drafting more than 5-7 players with the Celtics.

So if I only draft say 3 players, where do I get the rest of my players?  The remains of the players in those years minus the drafted ones?
