Smith Mid-Major update Topic

So with the old recruits working their way out of the system....

1 Mid-Major in the Sweet 16 and they got there by beating a 10 seed SEC team.

Then they promptly lost to a Big 10 team by 19 despite being a 2pt favorite.

I can't wait to see how bad next year gets!

what is bad about what you described?

bad that a two point favorite lost by 19?

bad that a mid major beat a 10 seed SEC team?

bad that only one mid major in the sweet 16?

Number of actual midmajors in the Sweet 16...

2010 - 5
2009 - 3
2008 - 4
2007 - 4
2006 - 6
2005 - 2
2004 - 4

I guess there is no problem.... (saturated in sarcasm)

Wow...I mean that is awful.  In 2005, there were 2 teams.  In 2009, there were 3.  So, one year in one world there was only 1.  Stop the presses.  The end is near!

Iba has 10 mid-majors in the 2nd round. I'll report back tomorrow about the results.

Two of them face each other so at least 1 will be in the Sweet 16.  There's also a #1 and #2 seed from the mid-major conferences

Thank you for the rebuttal sarcasm, however if 1 mid-major makes the S16 in a year loaded with old recruit upperclassman, then I do fear for the future.

The average is 4 mid-majors over the last 7 years, yet 1 is OK with you.

I count as the team playing mid major vs mid major.  I'll probably lose, but there were some great mid major teams in Iba this year- S Florida is RPI 11 and is 29-1 (of course I play them)

In Tark, which I believe is the only world with all "new" recruits, there are 6 teams from mid-major conferences ranked in the Top 25.  There are also several teams just outside the top 25.  In addition, your example uses a 7-year average to compare to one season.  Obviously, if there continues to be one every year for seven seasons, then it could be a problem.  But, you also need to look at how many mid-majors are coaches by humans.  There was a lot of panic and many human coaches dropped mid-major programs.  You need to look at all the variables and not just one and say the world is ending.

digging beneath the sarcasm, were you troubled that a 2 point favorite lost - that does happen a lot, right, in real world and in HD

were you troubled that mid major beat a 10 seed from SEC - seems reasonable to me

one mid major in the sweet 16 seems light, if it were sustained pattern it would suggest that there is a problem

I was pointing out the lack of competition from mid-majors. This is the first year I have counted the number of teams in the S16, so this is year 1 of a potential trend.
As for future years, I can see mid-majors ranked and have decent RPIs, it's not that hard to schedule smart and win your conference.  I want to see if the engine really lets upperclass heavy mid-majors compete with under class highly rated Big 6rs, as they should.

Of note -- in Smith there are 69 (if memory serves) BCS teams with human coaches, and 88 other DI human coaches.  In RL, there are approx. 72 BCS human coaches, and 7 zillion other DI coaches.  So, it's a little hard to draw this parallel.  Perhaps it's not the game that's broken -- perhaps there just needs to be more DI humans driving up competition in the non-BCS conferences thereby getting them more tournament $$ so they can better compete against the BCS teams.

jeff makes a good point - as with so many other elements of this game, it is a dynamic not static analysis - what WE do as coaches - or DONT do because there are not human coaches at some places makes a TON of difference....otherwise it would be no game at all

This is possibly the worst parallel to real life from HD that I've ever seen. No offense, but are you just out there to criticize HD or something? Because 1 season in one world of HD doesn't pose a problem at all in my opinion. If this occurs, say, 3 or 4 seasons in a row, then I would actually think this is potentially an area of concern. But considering the circumstances, this is a horrible argument.

I agree with everyone except Paul.
