position splitting all-star punishment Topic

When/if you split a player's playing time between two defensive positions, it seems to lessen their chances at making the all-star team.  Case in point:  Rios

You are correct, sir.

Well, I don't like it.

Then don't do it.

How many MLB utility players make an All-Star team?  Because that's what you call players who split time between positions.

Actually, my regular 2B has a 76 dur and my 3B has 71 dur, so I have to use the above guy at both 2b and 3b, since he's the only one who is qualified to play both.  I guess the solution is to start the position splitting to save their fatigue levels after the all-star game.

Why do you care if he's an All-Star?  Shouldn't you worry about what's best for your team's success as your primary concern?

I know why you do it.  I do the same thing.   If my 3B needs some time off, I'm likely to move my SS to 3B and play a defensive SS.   My 2B often ends up in LF and my 3B isn't above moving to RF.  I know I'm limiting their chance to be an A/S but I'd rather win games than say "Billy Joe has made 4 consecutive A/S games."

Yes, my primary concern is for my team's success.  Having said that, I still have those two guys with low durability, so I have a situation that needs dealing with.  In answer to your first question, why shouldn't I care if he's an all-star?  It gives me fake pleasure to have my fake ballplayers rack up the fake awards.

Then you have to get players with more durability and assign your soon to be fake A/S to a position.   As I said, utility guys don't make A/S teams.   Doesn't happen in the real world, doesn't happen in HBD.

Anyway, my point is this:  In real life there are some multi-positional players who make all-star teams.  Jose Bautista jumps out right away (since I live near Toronto), but I'm sure there has been more.  I would think that a player should make the AS team based on the whole body of work, not just what they did at one or another position separately.

Bautista lead the league in homers by a large margin and he started over 70% of his games at one position.  Your guy is hitting the ball really well but he's really close to splitting his time equally.  He's a utility player.  Bautista was not.

When i hear "utility player" I think of a guy who spot starts at several different positions when guys need rest, but isn't good enough to start at one position on his own.  I know Ty Wigginton made the AS team this year, he plays a few different positions.

I don't think it's a bad idea, but there are probably bigger fish WifS has to fry.

Yes, there are bigger fish to fry for sure, but I thought I'd throw the suggestion out there while I had it on my mind.
