The Automatic HOF Milestones Topic

We are all familiar with what have traditionally been the automatic MLB HOF numbers of 300, 500 and 3000. After seasons of analyzing my own 3 worlds, which are all decently competitive and score in the top third of anyone's rankings systems, and seeing the extreme numbers in the All-time leaders thread I believe that HBD's numbers should be a bit different.

Wins:  Considering the fact that only 9 pitchers currently have 300+ wins in the all-time records, this number definitely needs to be lower for HBD. I think a reasonable number would be 250.

Home Runs:  Despite the change to reduce home runs, it still seems that a lot of guys in HBD are able to put up 500 and they don't all seem like guys who should be auto locks for the Hall. If we are talking about an automatic, if this guy hits this number, he should be in the Hall, then I believe that 600 is probably a more appropriate number.

Hits:  Since it seems that most HBD hitters, save those with ultra-high splits, become useless against ML pitching once they are over 35, star position players in HBD seem to have shorter careers than similar players in MLB. Also, it seems that many of the best hitters in HBD have durability in the 70s, resulting in fewer ABs per season than the typical MLB star. As a result, the 3000 hit club in HBD seems to be more exclusive than the MLB version. I thought 2500 seemed like a nice looking number, but is possibly a bit too low. Perhaps 2700?

All thoughts and constructive comments welcome. Any RSFs can go elsewhere.

300 wins too hard, 500 HRs too easy, 3000 hits too hard.

250/600/2500 are good milestones.

Could you imagine a HBD hitter collecting 4000+ hits???  Just thinking how amazing that would be.

What iain said.   Comparing Aaron to Mordecai might be as silly as comparing the MLB to the Japanese Leagues.

Well then, what about those of you that believe that you are in the best of the best worlds (i.e. MG, Moneyball, etc.)
Don't you find similar stat results between those worlds as I have between my 3 worlds?
If so, then what would be your milestones for those worlds?

Though I suppose it helps for my world comparison that I only play in MLB theme worlds, so the ballpark effects are mostly consistent. (Colorado in play in 1 of the 3)

The 350/600/2500 seems like pretty good milestones to me as well.

One area that I think would get undervalued in the stat lines, but is a key part of many teams is the setup men.  In ML baseball, your top relievers are generally speaking all closers.  There are a few top setup men who can collect a "Holds" stat, which isn't offered in HD, but most top setup men eventually slide into the closer role, rightly or wrongly.  Conversly in HD, many shy away from listing a closer, and want their top setup men in there for the 7th or 8th inning, if caled upon.  W/o the hold stat, they'll typically fall short of an impressive wins stat as well as an impressive save stat.

I also wish there were playoff stats listed on the main page, actually a lot more stats in general, but especially playoff stats and how they compared over their "prime years" to other players at their position.  There's a pitcher in one of my worlds which has been solid for the most part in the regular season.  He was already a major leaguer (27 I think) when the world was created, and is now 37.  He's collected roughly 115 wins, despite playing on some poor teams the last 3 seasons as he started to age.  However, in the postseason, he's like 15-2.  He lead 3 teams to 4 different WS championships, including an impressing 4-1 w/ like a 1.5 for his first ring, and a 6-0 mark for his last ring.  The World Chat and HoF chat are good places to pimp a guy like that, but the stats listed, which is all some will look at won't tell the whole story.

How much do others consider the value of individual awards and team awards.  Do WS rings boost a guy a little higher than he would otherwise be?  Does a guy "need" an MVP award to make the hall, or a pair of silver sluggers?  How many gold gloves would it take for one to give a player their "ozzie smith" award?

FWIW, one of the developers in one of my world said they are close to making the vote counts avialble right after the HoF announcements, rather than having to wait until the following voting period.

AS nominations should not be put on HOF ballots.  I optimize the defensive positions in my lineup, so I shift guys from 2b to CF to other spots based on who's in the lineup.  So my regulars shift positions.  Some put up AS numbers, but don't 'qualify' at any one position for the AS team.

Looking at Coop Top 5(in S16)
AVG:  .319 - .360
HR:  543 - 616
Hits:  2267 - 2589
Wins:  233 - 266
ERA:  2.12 - 2.80

MG(in S18)
AVG:  .321 -.340
HR:   640 - 775
Hits:   2445 - 3007
Wins:   217 - 283
ERA:   2.89 - 3.00

I always felt the owners in Coop leaned more towards pitching while the owners in MG were more interested in outscoring you.   I consider both to be "Best of the Best", to use your words, but, as you can see, there's a pretty big difference in the career numbers.

What I left out is "That's why you can't compare numbers across worlds.   In worlds I feel are comparable, 500 homers is a pretty big deal in one and not so great in another.   An ERA under 3 is almost unheard of in one but looks achievable in another.    Milestone numbers pretty much have to be determined by the world and how it plays the game."

While I agree w/ the premise, my one question would be, how many got to the 500 homer mark?  Perhaps one world had a few guys that were way up there, while the world as a whole was similar.  I would assume your preception is accurate though, which makes it a valid point that you have to "consider" the world.  However, the reason above is why I'd love to see expanded stats.  I know WIS stand is it would tie up too much server space, but this is essentially a stats nerd site, and I've love to have more access to more historical stats.  I'd love to say "player x" may have only hit 491 home runs, but over his prime (say age 24 to 34) he hit the most homers in the league, had the third highest OPS, 5 all star appearances, etc...  Is it his fault that the world in that period perhaps went more pitcher happy/pitcher park happy, while in a latter/earlier period the world leaned more towards hitters parks and allowed more players to enflate their counting stats.

I'm curious as to whether people think this guy is HOF worthy, because he's never received any love in HOF voting in Mantle:

Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Bart Kirby

The case against him: never made an All-Star team, never won an award, hit a crapload of home runs playing 1B/DH in Durham.  One-dimensional player in a hitting-friendly ballpark.

The case for him: 622 career home runs, 11 straight years of 40+ HR / 100+ RBI's.  The dude produced consistently.

In Doubleday, Season 10 we have had 2 players play since season 1 and achieve the 500 HR mark. The next closest is about 50 HR off and he'll probably make it. The 4th and 5th place guys may not get it but they will end their careers in the 400's somewhere.  Everyone of them have place at least 9 of 10 seasons so to me the 500 HR mark is hard to get to unless you have multiple teams running P's that have no business playing in the ML.

I wouldn't vote for Kirby, but I wouldn't be upset if he made the Hall.
