How successful at DIII could a PF with these ratings be? Not necessarily a stud, but maye someone who could score 9-10 ppg without a huge distro?

55 Ath
55 spd
60 reb
50 def
60 LP
40 BH
40 Pass

That guy can easily score that much if not more with that speed and BH at the PF position.  Depending on the offense of course.

It's a motion offense. And it might be closer to 60 speed. His shot blocking would only be ~25 though. Would he be good enough at defense and rebounding? He's essentially a SF playing PF.

yes. i'd play him at SF and PF happily.

If you look at my St johns team, I have two freshman SFs that project to those ratings. I'm asking specifically about Mark Ashburn though. I couldnt find a PF I liked so I took two very similar SFs.

that is a stud in d3. a very solid player in d2. i'd have a lot of fun with a player like that.............oh and don't play him at sf that would actually hurt him not help him as some have suggested. if you want to get cute, move him between the center and power forward spots to avoid a great defender. tada!

thanks skunk. do you think that he is not fast enough to play at SF? or he just wouldn't be able to take advantage of mismatches at SF?

i wont speak to what skunk is or isn't thinking but he is definitely fast enough to play SF...that is certainly not the issue

i just think moving him to sf would neutralize his advantages. think about it. is this guy gonna be a better combined ath/spd pf/c then his competition nine time out of ten in d3? yes. is he gonna be much better then a sf guarding him? not too often. then all he has is his rebounding advantage, big whoop.

gotcha. thanks for the advice guys - I'm feeling a little bit better about the future at St. Johns.

Skunk just out of curiosity - what skill set would you look for in a SF?
1/24/2011 12:44 AM
i don't recruit small forwards. i find the best talent at sg and pg spot so i recruit two extra guards. do they need rebounding skills? no, but i'd like a bit. look at my d3 laverne  team in knight i have been playing guards there forever. just get me some sexy ath and speed rating with a slice of defense and i'm happy.

do you look for LP in your guards?
1/24/2011 12:51 AM
almost all my guards have a low post rating of 1, so that is a no.

pj i certainly don't have the resume or experience of some of these other coaches....so take anything i tell you with a grain of salt

...but like skunk i don't really recruit SF's or actively look for LP in my guards.  However, while I have a relatively small sample over the last few months, I do feel like my guards who have developed some low post game over the course of time have become more efficient scorers.  For instance take a look at Eric Briggs on my EConn team in Phelan.  He is +24 in LP this season as my starting SG and while his distro hasn't changed much if at all over the entire season, his scoring efficiency and totals have definitely improved from the beginning of the season up until now.

so, while having no LP game (and even having no LP potential) won't dissuade me from recruiting a guard, i don't think it's completely useless to try and develop it if you have a player with high potential in LP
