This is my 4th year in DIII and I'm trying to decide if this guy is worth my time??
I'm trying to follow the "rules" of recruiting that I've been reading in the forums and I'm stuck, I've got a SF that has a ton of upside but only has a WE of 15!! I've already bought the FS on him and these are his numbers
        Current Rating   Potential
Ath           40                    High
Spd         39                    High
Reb         29                   High
Def          46                    High
Blk           19                   High
LP            25                    AVG
Per           22                    High
BH            34                   High
Pas          15                    High
Sta            58                    High
Dur            57                   Low
FT              59.4%            High
He also has a 3.6 HS GPA

extremely tempting but I think I would pass. I took this guy and he had similar potential to your player with 23 WE (or maybe 22) and this is him in his JR year, after a RS:

Or this guy, high across the board except for passing, which is avg:

Hmmmm.   He could be really good.

I would take him if I could:

1) Redshirt him and start him 3 years
2) start him 4 years.

Or best yet, RS him and then start him 4 years.

He needs playing time to get the WE up and reach his high potential.

After taking the guys above, I say if you take him, don't RS him. A RS year means he gaines 15-20 points, and then lose a couple over the off season. RS someone with higher WE.

Are you saying I should tell him I'm redshirting him or give him the scholarship then redshirt him, won't the second option make his WE go down even more??  There is the option of starting him right now though.

nope, you can RS a player w/o informing RS.

Yea i know and I've done it once and the WE dropped like 7 or 8 points

Pull the RS and reapply next time.

he means apply a redshirt, wait and see what the player says (either he's fine with it and his WE doesnt drop or he's not fine with it and his WE drops). if his WE drops, remove the redshirt and reapply it immediately. wait and see what he says, THIS time his WE might not drop. etc.

I think tianyi is saying that you can try to apply and remove the redshirt as many times as you want before the season starts.  The one time I tried it so far, I put the shirt on the guy before the first exhibition game.  He balked.  I took it off.  Then I didn't play him at all during the first exhibition game.  Put it on him again and this time he told me that maybe it was a good idea, after all.

That said, I also noticed that his improvement during the redshirt year was fairly equivalent to his classmates who did play, albeit sparingly off the bench.  All of them gained around 30 points or so of total ratings.

Whether he complains or not (assuming you didn't offer PT or FR start) is a diceroll. You can reroll the dice with RS w/o penalty.

I disagree with Tianyi here.  If you RS him, then yes, over the off-season he will lose some of the points he gained.  BUT - in his RS year, he will probably get up to a C or so in IQ in your offense and defense.  This means you can start him as a redshirt freshman the following year, which should help his WE increase more quickly, which of course will help everything else go up more quickly as well.  Whereas starting him as a true freshman, his IQ will hurt you more.
