Loosing a recruit, and lessons learned. Topic

How much $ have you spent on a recruit and still lost them?  I know it depends of if your in Div I, Div II, or Div III.

What was the lessons you learned?   The team you were in a battle against had a higher prestige, or did the messages you read were misinterpreted?  Or did you just got outspent?

My personal record is $48,000, plus a start and 25 minutes.

D1 Allen, I was A- Colorado and I stole a PG from Iowa from B Minnesota at 500 miles.

BUT A Wisconsin came in late and just was higher prestige, closer, and had more money to spend probably.  So I was beat on all 3 fronts.

Spent 18k on a recruit at D2 (with 5 openings), every last penny.  After going two days into signings, both of us were out of money and I was leading.  I went to bed and the next morning he signed with the other guy.  The other guy had put in $100 worth of phone calls that he was saving and it was enough to tip the balance.  18k, 30 min and a start and it came down to 10 phone calls, every last dollar counts, don't waste 'em.

I never let my recruits loose unless I have more targets than spots

DI $78K   DII $13K   DIII $9K  All three were battles where prestige, distance and open spots were roughly the same. Also, in all three cases I was fighting at least one other battle against teams that had no business challanging me but wouldn't go away.

86K. Player was Mr Alabama (I was coaching Bama), Bama was favorite school, and he was 10 miles from campus. Was also #1 Center in country. Conference mate with a full letter grade prestige advantage took him from me...I learned nothing except that my conference mates are bastards

Got an early dropdown message for my D3 team, but Simmie jumped on him in the first cycle.  Thinking I could out-recruit any Sim, I fell victim to my own hubris.  With only about $4k to spend total (1 schollie open plus 1 slot open due to a transfer), I figured I could throw it all at this player and get him.

He stubbornly resisted until my eyes watered and I had to grab another non-pulldown at the last minute while I still had some money left.  And as luck would have it, a conference rival managed to outspend the sim and sign the kid.

Lessons learned: Know your limits and don't always expect to out-recruit the Sim.  Especially at D3.

37k, a start and 30 minutes. He was a four star 10 miles away and I was a B prestige. An A+ about 400-500 miles away was able to grab him with no problem.

easiest way to make the nt is to have ur conf mates recruit poorly, and you cruise to a CT. love it!

Just a little over $9K in D3.

Gosh, I spent about 45k on a recruit back when I was at George Mason. Guy simply had more funds (open schollies) but I was too stubborn to give him up. Dumb move by me because I truly never had a chance with the huge disadvantage I had.

My golden rules of HD recruiting so far:

1. Never gamble unless you can afford to lose.
2. Always have a backup plan, and a backup backup.
3. Don't get too attached to your scouting reports.  Someone else is reading the same lists.
4. Never let on that you're broke.  Jingle the coins in your pocket and whistle "I'm a Rich Man" until signings are over.
5. You can generally recruit better players than you think you can.  See #1.
