Best Player You have never heard of Topic

I fancy myself a guy who knows a little something something about baseball.   While doing some research for a 1928 draft I found John Stone OF DET.   I think he is the best player in MLB history I have never heard of.

Who's yours?

I looked up Stone but saw no reference on why he kind of abruptly retired at 32 after 9 AS quality seasons.   He was traded straight up for Goose Goslin at one point.

He did die at 50 which leads me to believe alcohol might have been an issue.

Don't think it was alcohol.  I believe he contracted tuberculosis, which is why he had to retire young.  He was a scout for the Tigers for a number of years and died young.

Guys whose names I wouldn't even recognize if I looked at a team for possible twist value - Ray Grimes and Jim Hickman.

Guys I have heard of but I had no idea they ever had a great season (or multiple great seasons) - Tito Francona and Elmer Flick

Guys that I would have never heard of except for WIS... the list is insanely long but at the top I'd put the Federal League guys - Steve Evans, Bill Kenworthy, Dave Davenport

I looked at your list and was like really?  John doesn't know who Ray Grimes is?  I mean come on, he was the last spit baller....everyone knows that.  Oh wait, that was Burleigh Grimes....

Jack Doyle.  His '94 season is the best 1B bagain you'll find in the sim.

His '97 season may be better.  He batted .352, had 111 RBIs, scored 125 runs, and stole 139 bases for me.  For $4.8 - pretty good deal.

Steve Gromek.  I've probably heard of him but he never made an impression.  He was 18-6, 220 IP, 3.43, 3rd in the CYA for a 1944/1982 team.  Ace of the staff for a team that won the WS.  So far in 45/83 he's 11-8, 166 IP, 2.81 ERA after 101 games.
