Is there a point where velocity matters? Topic

HBD pitchers with low velocity can be very effective if their other ratings are top notch. Is there a point where it is just too low to be overcome? Case in point: whatifsports.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/ProspectProfile.aspx  Will thi guy be as effective as his other ratings seem to indicate?

I'd never completely ignore velocity.

Oh, I agree, which is why I'm asking. Has anyone had a pitcher with velocity of under 20 be a dominant pitcher?

We can't see the player that you tried to link.

haven't really seen many pitchers w/ < 20 velocity at the ML level, but if he has good control/splits/pitches, it won't preclude him from being effective.  he'll just be a lil worse than he would be with a higher velocity.

Over time I have paid less attention to velocity.  I still notice it, but have seen pitchers that dominate with velocity of 35 or less.  It is one of the ratings I treat as gravy, providing all others are good.  It doesn't make or break a player in my book.

This guy shown above is an extreme case. His projections show an eventual Cy Young Award-level pitcher except for velocity, which is projected to top out at less than 15. Opinions?

can't see the guy but if everything else is very good i'm sure he'll be fine

I don't think it would prevent him from winning some Cy Youngs, if that's what you're asking.

K/9 will be less than average, but if you have a good defense it shouldn't make any difference.

This guy is probably not considered dominant, but still quite effective: Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Sherry Clay.

I will use a player with low velocity, but you have to temper your expectations if he also has a poor GB/FB rating.

His velocity isn't under 20, its 23... but I'd be willing to bet if it was 5 pts lower and at 18, he'd still be a stud.

I tend to agree with rangerup's assessment of velocity...

Will Friend hasn't suffered particularly from a velo of 18.  He's a stud.

And 39 isn't 18, but Raul Flores has won 4 Cy Young's with a 39 velo.
