you won't get full value from him. If used to capacity then he'll be fatigued every time you use him in back-to-back games. The only way to avoid this fatigue is to underutilize him. Your best bet is to throw him every 2 games on a higher pitch count. you still won't get full value but you'll come closer.

You have to remember there are two types of fatigue for the pitchers: usage (pitches) and appearance (games) fatigue; and both of these affect the pitcher simultaneously when dealing with pitchers that you want to reach a high amount of innings (700+) or games (85+). In addition to both of these types of fatigue, both of them are handled differently at the beginning of the season in ways that have a negative effect on your chances of achieving either or both of these feats. In essence, the only way to get more than 85 games or 700 innings from a pitcher is to not let them appear in a game for at least the first several games.

This is difficult because you then have to have enough innings to get through those games without your big pitcher, as well as enough pitchers to avoid appearance fatigue problems during those games. The easiest, though possibly least efficient way of doing this is to throw those games with scrubs and by burning a couple of pitchers out immediately. While more difficult, it is more efficient to plan an entire pitching staff to accommodate this and try to pick up some wins during this span as well.

Towards the end of the season, I have, on more than one occasion, gotten up to 17  straight starts [edited from 12, I forgot about my John Clarkson experiments] without dropping below 100% fatigue. So, it is possible to go back to back starts, you just have to seriously micromanage during the first half of the season to accommodate a pitching schedule that avoids each of the types of fatigue: appearance, usage, and early-season.

When I ran Silver King through a season, I couldn't get back-to-back starts at all. I just tried to get a complete game every second start, and that got me most of the IP. Still not full value, but there's some benefit to not having any recent usage fatigue for the rest of the staff, since they never had to pitch back-to-back either.

I recently started an OL team with the express goal of setting the single-season wins record for an individual pitcher. Owner norman1 holds the current record, which is 71 by John Clarkson. After looking at a few pitchers who I figured could start at least 81 games for me, I settled on 1888 Silver King.

I drafted 8 part-time batters (350-400 PA's each) who will be starting only when Silver starts, and pinch-hitting when he doesn't. I also have two good 40 inning setup men who will only be used when Silver pitches (unless they're underused, in which case I'll take them off the bench for the non-Silver starts).

For the 81 non-Silver starts, I'll be using scrub pitchers and batters who (with the help of my AAA) should have just enough innings/PA's that injuries won't be an issue. They stink something awful and I don't expect them to win more than a handful of their 81 games, but that's the price I'm willing to pay to give Silver the best shot possible at this record.

So far I've played 25 games. In the 13 games Silver started, he won 11 and took 2 no decisions (which my team split). So, he's 11-0 after 13 starts, and ***uming 81 starts that translates to just over 68 wins. We're in the ballpark, at least.

In the 12 scrub starts, I'm 0-12, and except for a 1-0 loss most of those have been blowouts by 10 or more runs.

I have a question for anyone who's ever used Silver (or a similar pitcher). After his 13th start in the AM game, he went down to 87 (100) and "tired from recent game activity." I notice the fatigue number after his starts is slowly climbing, from 81 to 83 to 85 and now 87. I've also taken 10 pitches off his pitch count (he's now at 100/110) in the hopes that I can get him to 100% after a start, and I can use him 2 starts in a row at some point, maybe even more than once.

Does this sound like something a pitcher with 703 innings/162 would be capable of doing? Or should I just be happy with 81 starts (which it looks like he'll get with ease)?

i've never used the king, but judging from how i have used other SPs, if he is way under his IP/162 when you get to game 130 or so, he'll probably be able to start back-to-back games at 100.

I had a ***** of a time getting him to 700 IP. You will always see him dip into the high 80's after each game he pitches. Every once in awhile he will only dip to 90-91(100). I guess if he gets to that point you can consider starting him in back to back games. I used him recently in a 140 Franchise league and started him in 82 games (every other except for the last two in a row at the end of the season) I think he ended up going 48-21 with over 50 complete games.

See just4me's thread...it is definitely possible to get more mileage out of him, but it requires careful managing (and not pitching him at all for the first couple of games of the season.) I used him in an O/L sometime last year, didn't monitor pitch counts as closely as I should have, but got close to 100 starts and over 700IP out of him.

Thanks, contrarian23. Funny, I searched for that thread, but for some reason the first page (where most of the info is) didn't show up.

I see that just4me kept Silver's pitch count lower than I have it. Maybe I should try that, and see if he doesn't get rested faster for back to back starts."

Check '85 John Clarkson's performance history   I twice got 95+ starts and 850+ IP out of Clarkson, including the best season on his history (that one included 17 consecutive starts and 20 starts in the last 21 games of the season.

Or '85 Ed Morris who has had several 95+ start and 800+ IP seasons in his history

Or '86 Matt Kilroy who has a 91 start and 770 IP in his and in a progressive I got, without really trying, 85 starts and 720+ IP.

In my next OL team I'm going to run out the '89 Clarkson and try to get 105 starts and 850 IP.
