HBD should have Super Twos.

A "Super Two" player is a guy with almost 3 years of service time. Their 3rd pre-arb year becomes a 4th arb year. So if you used the 20-day callup trick, you would still save the year of team control, but you wouldn't get essentially a 4th year of pre-arb salary. I believe the way it works in MLB is that, of all players with between 2.00 and 2.99 years of service time, the 20% with the most service time get "Super Two" ststus.

Agree,.I think the figure is 17%, but no reason this can't be implemented.

I thought it changed to 20% in the new CBA, but I could be off base on that one.

Exactly. WIFS already has to dumb down certain rules so the genreal public will enjoy the game. Adding what might be the most complicated rule in ALL SPORTS is probably not a good idea.

Yes. It's WAAAAYYYY more complicated than Type A, B and D draft picks.

Do it. It'll stop, or adjust the "bring him up at 20 games" gaming of the system.

It wouldn't be that hard to program or explain.

I agree with deathinahole.  It would stop one of the ways experienced players game the system. I know I'd think more about delaying bringing up a rookie if I wasn't 100% sure that waiting 20 days would get me an extra cheap season.

It's no secret.   Not sure that's how "experienced players game the system" any more than anyone who can read can game the system.

I've thought they should add this from the beginning.  That being said, if they wanted to keep it really simple, they could just adjust the threshold for delaying arbitration to a number of days/games that would make it more of a decision to be weighed on whether you bring a guy up.  20 games is basically a no brainer (especially if it's a guy who won't be able to play 162 games anyhow), if it was more like half a season, you'd have to put some more thought into it.

Not a big deal one way or the other at this point, however.

The flip side in waiting that long would be that some teams would fall out of contention and simply delay the decision for another season.

It's gaming the system because there's no Super 2.

Do it. Stat.

As I said, changing the time frame just delays the decision for some.
2/14/2012 2:24 PM
True. But now you're strategizing it. Why are you trying to dumb down the game?
2/14/2012 2:32 PM
I just think this might be one of those rules that doesn't translate well to HBD.   I like to play in worlds where people are trying to win this year not next year or the year after.   By changing the eligibility, the also-rans are more likely to hold good players back even longer.    If I'm 18-31, I'm not going anywhere.   Risking calling up a player to the 20%(or 17%) isn't worth it.   However, if I'm 8-12 and 2 games out, that player or two might put me in the playoffs.   I'm calling them up.
