first time setting practice plan... is this right? Topic

It seems like I'm putting too few points towards attributes.

Basically I took over a really bad Sim AI team. Everyone's GPA's are in the low 2's. So I have to allocate more points toward study hall to keep them eligible... I'm also switching from Fast break to Motion, still not sure if this practice plan is normal or not:

Way too many SH minutes IMO.

You are giving too many minutes in SH and many other areas.

I didn't really give any players more than 10 minutes max in SH in my first two seasons, and most of the time they had 2.7+ GPAs.

If a player has low potential in an area, you shouldn't really give them more than 7 minutes (3 if PER/LP) unless you must.

I would take some minutes away from the individual practice areas, and put more minutes into learning the motion offense, as most of your players are inexperienced with it.

Woah, nauds is in HD, no way!!

I'm using this formula from the HD Player's Guide:

  • Freshman: 4.0 - HS GPA x 10
  • Sophomore: 3.6 - GPA x 10
  • Junior: 3.2 - GPA x 10
  • Senior: 2.8 - GPA x 10

I sent you a SM a few days ago, I saw you were an HD stud and asked to learn from the master. Now we can have some all time scorer battles! :D

All of my players are 2.0 or 2.1 GPA... Is that formula from the player's guide not correct?

that is a good formula for new players to use, as it virtually assures that you'll suffer no grade related suspensions. It is fairly conservative however, and many if not most experienced coaches use less (maybe far less) minutes in SH. It varies and there is randomness involved, so I'd advise to start with those figures (or modified based on this discussion) and see what happens when grades first come out. Modify if necessary...

In my non-championship experience, you do need more study hall when you take over a team, as all of their players are virtually 2.0 idiots.  That forumla (in my experience) can be problematic when a guy is a 2.0 GPA.

I give all freshmen 10 minutes of SH, and all other players 0. Just pay attention during the Midterms report, and if anyone is near or below 2.0, raise their SH significantly (by 10 or 20 points, depending on the situation).

EDIT: - I'll give JUCOs 10 minutes as well.

It works. I have 4 teams, 2 that are pretty successful, and have only had one player lose time due to grades in my memory.

I go with 5 for freshmen and 3 for soph's and then adjust at the midway point.  I think I've had 1, maybe 2 guys get below a 2.0 in my coaching lifetime.

P.S.  Your team seems to be a bit on the extreme side, so I'd probably go with 5 minutes for everyone and see what happens in that 1st semester.  I can't remember a time ever needing to give minutes to Jr's or Sr's, but your squad might be an exception.  If they're all over 3.0, I'd drop to 3 or zero and feel confident.

I wouldn't go with 5 for freshmen.  I think you're asking for guys to be too close for comfort at mid-terms.  I'd go 8-10 for frosh and not have to worry much.

Now that I actually look at your link.  Here are a couple thoughts:
  1. LP is important at every position.  It is far more important for forwards, but it still helps scoring efficiency for guards.  Put a bunch of minutes in LP for Rhea & Nix.  SIM AI never has guards practice LP, but that just means it's an area of opportunity when a human takes over for SIM.
  2. When I'm new to a team I will typically set everything to at least 8 (core or not) for the exhibitions and then adjust based on what I see.  "Red" ratings could still move up +6.9; "Black" may only be +7.  Hopefully, a quick email from the Asst. coach might allow you to drop those minutes to zero and concentrate elsewhere.
  3. I advise against switching offense, because it will set your team back from what could be a modestly competitive season.  It's your team though.  If you switch, I would suggest practicing motion, but playing "fastbreak" for the first 8-10 games and have the team practice 25 motion & 15 M2M (or 20 if you can spare the minutes).
  4. I think the advise you are getting on SH minutes may get this team in trouble, but is probably the way to go.  Shorting SH minutes will at least give you a shot at getting their categories maxed out.  You'll just need to adjust immediately based on the midterm report.  [Take note of High School GPA as well.  I think that you should see that on each of your inherited players.]

Good advice, when does the first email from the Asst coach come?

As a general rule when it comes to points in practice plan, I know after 25 points you see diminished returns. But what do you need to set the points at to keep a player from regressing in an attribute.
2/21/2012 1:53 PM
Emails from the assistant will probably come in after your first practice, maybe a couple after that.

3 min is enough to prevent regression in LP and PER, 7 is enough in the other attributes.  Once you get an email about an attribute, then 0 is enough.
