a couple draft questions:
 
1) I just had the #1 pick in World Bench. was pumped about my guy, then after the draft I found out that my scouts didn't see 3 of the top 4 prospects. don't love this, since it would translate to the Nationals having a 25% chance of knowing Strasburg or Harper existed leading up to those drafts in real life.  but, it is what it is.  is there any way to prevent that happening again? or at least reduce probability? I had $18M in each scouting (HS & Col). do your draft settings affect the players you see at all?

2) I'd like to "dominate" the draft, so any advice or tips are welcome!

1. Just because you didnt' see a guy, doesn't mean he's awesome.  It's a "grass is greener" idea that doesn't always hold water.  There's no way to see everyone, but the more your spend, the more guys you'll see, and the more reliable their projections will be. This is the only way of getting value for those who spend more on the draft.

2. The draft is the singular part of HBD where a greater input of time and effort will reap greater results.  You'll never get an all-star in the 5th round, but you can get usable players into the 7th if you have an adequate draft budget and put in the time.  Also, the more stocked your system is with passable, semi-useful players the more likely the DITR lightening bolt is to strike a guy who doesn't totally suck to begin with.

1)  20/20 would reduce the chance of that happening again.   But it doesn't ensure it.    Your draft settings will affect who you see on the bottom end not the top.

2)  If by "dominate" you mean "pick the best available", just rank everyone you think has a BL future.   Leave enough spots for several "ANY" in your settings and you'll pick your highest ranked player until you're out of ANY.

To help ease your pain about not seeing 3 of the top 4, consider this . . . you're also seeing guys that others are not seeing.

That might not help you when you're drafting #1, but when you're drafting somewhere in the middle of the pack and a guy you really like falls to you that you didn't expect to get, it's because others drafting ahead of you may not have seen him.

In the end, it all balances out.

I'm with iain here,

put in the time.

I know I personally click on the first 250 prospects or so in every draft.  If you don't, some guys just slide way down and are missed.In last years draft, I bet i clicked on more than 400 players.  Most just require a click and an exit, because you can quickly tell they are gong nowhere....but you always find the guy who is listed WAY below where he should be.

I found this guy,  WesleyWilson lingering about #180 last year.  I have no idea why, as I had a $16M/$16M scouting budget.  He projects to 86-84-62-84-80.  He's a 66-60-51 defensive catcher....but those offensive #'s will make up for the lower PC.  Had I not clicked on all those players I would have missed him.

I got him with the 25th pick last year, a real steal.  Research helps.  I would have missed him.

Exactly, moe.  I sort by ratings I deem important, and bump up guys who rate highly in those areas.  I will always find guys listed in the 200+ or even 400+ who I bump up.  Sometimes they're 1-trick ponies (def. C or PR), but by the 6th or 7th round, they beat career HiAers, right?

Wesley Wilson would have been listed as a DH.   IF you did not have enough "ANY" or "DH" settings, he gets passed over until someone does.   My best "value" pick in a long time is Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Damaso Gandarillas.  His low health/dur dropped him to 31st.   You don't have to click every player but you can sort by projected and currents to find who you think might be a worthwhile BL player.

I think relievers are easily the most underrated players in the draft in terms of initial ranking. A great way to find these guys is by sorting by vs RHB split and simply going through that entire list, ranking until the vR split is around 60ish. Very frequently, relievers seem to be in the 150-200 range to start. I generally just throw all the relievers around the 30-50 range by clicking the "move up 10" button and then re-ranking that range of players once I have gone through the list. Gotten some decent relievers at a value spot in the draft by doing this

thanks guys, a lot to learn there.  I have been spending quite a bit of time & I've gotten a couple good "value" picks. this guy's no Damaso Ghanaria, but I got him at #66 (1st pick of 2nd rd, we had a TON of comp picks)  Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Rich Salmon .. he was in the 400's on my "original" draft board. proj: 94-17-71-79-77 hitting (con-pow-vL-vR-eye), w/ passable defense at C (although I like better PC) - 5-22-75-87-55 (rg-glv-arm-acc-PC).

I also understand the benefit to guys not drafting at the top, but I think 3 of the top 4 guys is extreme- especially since I wasn't going cheap on scouting (I'd say 18M each isn't going cheap).

how do your draft settings affect guys at the bottom? any suggestions on maximizing those settings?

Durability of 25 (not sure what it projects to) . . . he's not going to be able to give you a lot of PA's.

Think this guy:  Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Juan Ferrer   So they have value.

With your guy, his OVR was low and I'm sure, with the 5 range, he was listed as a DH.   That's why he was in the 400s.

I'd have to think it's going to be hard to get a guy with that durability anywhere close to his projections without incurring a significant injury risk...  Just won't get the PT.

I didn't draft Ferrer so I don't know what his projections were but I can imagine his split projections were much higher than 93/93.   He improved over 30 in each and never got more than 245 AB in any one season(last season counting playoffs).

And, since he was with my team all year, I can guarantee that he never played less than 100%.
