Significant Others Topic

I thought of this because of the How "in to" it thread.
My girlfriend has no interest in anything technological and hates my obsession with HD.  She says that there's a reason it's called "fantasy".  I described that it's simulation so it's more like fantasy fantasy basketball, but that didn't exactly help things.  That said, she suddenly likes HD  whenever recruiting is going on because it's the only time i'll wake up in the middle of the night to get her water or get up early to make breakfast.
How do you all describe your HD obsession to significant others and what do they think about it?
Any good stories regarding HD and real-world relationships?  There has to be someone that had an akward first date or something because of HD.

this seems like a good place for alblack to tell his on the plane story...

this doesn't compare to the alblack airplane story, but my wife always refers to me on hd as me 'doing my little basketball', even though bc of hd, i'd volunteer from time to time to check on a crying baby so i could check my scores and even read the pbp. well, my son is now 3 1/2 and when he sees me on the lap top in the morning, he says something along the lines of either "are you winning your little basketball?" or "can we [insert: play games, look at pictures, etc on the computer] when you're done with your basketball?" i'm trying to convince him to get a team, but he's just interested in disney junior. booo.

There is a husband and wife combo in one of my conferences.... I am thisclose to getting my wife to jump in and grab a team.  She refers to HD as my "avatar world"

To simple-minded people/99% of the people who don't understand WIS, I refer to it also as fantasy fantasy basketball.

I always refer to it as "pretend basketball.

Many years ago, '02 or so, I got my wife to try the baseball sim as she was a baseball nut as a kid.  But she didn't love the sim and doesn't like hoops much at all (real or pretend).  So all she knows about HD is not to ask what's wrong if I bark at the laptop.

My wife says I get HD, she gets spa days.

I have mentioned before how my wife understands and supports my addiction to HD. She looks forward to recruiting almost as much as I do. We discuss the various players and decide who to go after. She gets up early to get ready for work and does the 5AM cycle of recruiting. We go over game results and box scores together and she gets as frustrated as I do when we lose. When we are visiting friends or family, she knows that we will be leaving in time to get home for the next recruiting cycle or else using their computer to recruit or check scores. Whenever I change teams, she helps me decide what team to take and helps research the geography for nearby teams. It's like having an assistant coach in my own house and it is great to be able to talk to someone about HD that doesn't look skeptically at me like I need a padded room.

Here is a tip for those whose significant others are critical of the time and money spent on HD. Just remind them that at least they know where you are and what you are doing and that you are not out with the boys getting wasted or putting that money into garter belts.

My wife refers to it as "your little basketball thing" as well. She constantly asks what I am doing on the laptop even though she knows it is HD. I hope to break her spirit one day.

My wife supports my HD habit (yes, that's what we refer it as...) because it means I'm no longer monopolizing the Playstation3 with Madden or The Show or some other sports franchise. She's not a fan of me saying I need to stay up 'til midnight to make sure my recruit hasn't been poached or something and I'm not sure she quite shares the enthusiasm I have for knocking off ranked opponents, but she understands that 1. I'm happy and 2. she gets to play video games or watch movies on the TV that weren't available to her previously :)

Key notes

1. got an infant, handle that pesky 2:30-3:30 am need for a bottle, diaper change, etc - and get a chance to recruit in that difficult cycle

2.. got young kids? in a location where internet access is limited - "honey, I just saw a poster for story time at the public library, do you think that might be a good break for the kids?  I could take them there while you had some quiet time on the beach....." libraries have access

more later

I sometimes can't sleep due to a goofy heartbeat thingy. In the middle of last night my wife said I should go do my "computer basketball thing" until it settled down and I could get some sleep. She has mentioned to others that I've been doing "recruiting" so long that 2 of our children have been married and divorced in that time.

There was the time years ago -  I was in the midst of a really big recruiting battle.  I was at a wedding reception.  I just had to get on line and I could not do it with my blackberry.   Slipped out to the parking lot, went to the car, opened trunk, grabbed laptop, logged in, launched a few key home visits and came back in.

Someone saw me and asked whether I was okay - had to mumble about having left something in the car......red faced

Been married 13 years...so I connected my HD teams to the, uh, extracurricular activities with the wifey. This way she doesn't mind me waking up for the 2 and 5am cycles.

The more I'm winnin'...the more she's grinnin'.
