How long would you wait to call this guy up? Topic

I have Phil Gilbert  www.whatifsports.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx about to start a season at AAA to me he is ready to play on the big league club but my ML team is probably another season or 2 from competing.  Should i just keep him at AAA to save service time?

I don't think anyone can give you a hard time for keeping any prospect in the MinL for 3 1/2 seasons (counting the year they were drafted or signed as 1/2).

If he can help you make the playoffs, bring him up.  Once you make the playoffs anything can happen in a short series.

If you're a long way from having a shot at the playoffs, I'd give him another 1-2 seasons in the MinL.

He's not a difference-maker on a good team.    He's a LF with 58 DUR.   Which means he's a part-time LF that's 19 y/o.

I'm in your league dhanson. While he could be a serviceable MLer now, you're probably not going to win anything this year, so I'd keep him where he could get the most playing time. The low DUR is not going to allow him FT play no matter where he is. I'd be concerned about that 54 HE, but that's always been a crapshoot.

Feels like you're rushing him.  Check free agency to see if you can find someone similar.

I can't see your projections, but I'd assume his DUR will hopefully rise into at least the 70s by the time he's done developing.  Just hold off a little.

He will be a nice player on your team in a few years. Give him a little longer.

And welcome to the forums.

AAA is already too soon for him.  He should be in AA this year, AAA the next, with AAA for the first 21 the year after and then call up.

he hit 410 with 17 home runs in 60 games of AA, thats why i would think to start him at AAA, but maybe starting him at AA would make more sense hmmm

Until he is the best player you have at that position.

He's fine in AAA.  Don't demote him.
He can definitely play in the majors, but I'd wait until he's more fully baked in the minors.

I'd leave him in AAA this season, then call him up 20 games into next year.  His Durability should jump this offseason, hopefully to 70+ or so.  Also his range should jump this off-season so his 2b defense will go from damaging, to hopefully respectable by next season

Watch his playing time (I'd platoon him).  When guys get too far below 100%, the become prone for injuries.  With his Health, that is a serious issue.

Try to ignore minor league stats when making decisions like that.  Look at ratings.  He's fine talent-wise in AAA.  But you may want to keep him there for a year or two, now.

Also, DO NOT demote him.  You may be subject to a demotion penalty, where a player gets "discouraged" and his ratings fall some.  Start him as much as you can in AAA, rest him when his stamina begins to fall.

FWIW, I continue to think the "Hold him back 20 games" is one of the dumbest strategies around in competitive worlds.    10 of those games are against divisionmates.    The difference between 8-12 and 11-9 with a couple of tie-breaker wins can be huge.

It depends who it is.  Is a relief pitcher?  You can probably wait.  Is a starting pitcher, but you got a long man who can take his spot adequately?  Maybe you could wait.  Is it a guy who will start and hit well at SS and you got a no-hit utility guy playing those first 20 games at SS? Then yea, you should bring him up.

If he's not a difference-maker, why are you worrying about him 11 seasons from now?

The guy I'm going to have for 11 years, I usually bring up right away.  I found that the guys I hold back are generally the guys who I may be cutting/trading after 5-6 years.  So that extra year of min salary for the good, but not great, reliever or starter is important.

THIS guy in question?  Isn't ready.  But when he is, I'd argue to bring up right away.
