Practice two defenses? Topic

Has anyone tried this? Is it even worth it? My new DIII team runs the press ... but I was thinking, what if I run up against a team that has much more ATH/SPD than mine? I'd like to be able to play a zone instead (somewhere down the line, once the grades are at least respectable).

If this is a really crappy idea and/or no one has tried it, how do any press teams out there gameplan for facing a better ATH/SPD team? Thanks.

There's folks that run hybrid defenses (press/man and press/zone, I did the latter when first starting the game). I dropped it a couple seasons after the engine changed and the turnover numbers dropped. I personally felt it better to have the minutes in the "second" defense distributed in the individual portion of the practice plan instead, but there are others who continue to run multiple defenses. I think it's just a matter of taste.

As for the second half of the question, if I'm outgunned at Ath and Spd, I slow the game down and try to control things via tempo. And then I hope the RNG gods are smiling upon me that night. And, honestly, if you're at a big disadvantage in both those categories, it likely doesn't matter if you're in a different defense.

One of my teams is doing it, 20 mins in zone and 5 in press.  Gives options for late game, but also by the time senior year roles around all those 5 minutes going into press should make it not horrible.  Haven't seen how it affects the regular stat growth so far, but I'm liking the flexibility for now.

What kind of letter grade do your seniors usually have in press?

yanks, just saw your vassar guys IQs ... very impressive. What kind of distribution are you using to get those grades? 15/10?

I'm only in year two, but B in zone, C in press after freshman year

20 Minutes will get you to a A your SR. year if you start as an F
5 Minutes will get you to a B- or B by your SR. year if you start at an F

It also depends upon the kid's high school GPA - the higher the GPA , the faster he learns the sets, and the lower the GPA, the slower he learns the sets. So it isn't he same for all players.

I usually use 22 for O/D. Would it be better to just leave it at 20? Or do those two extra minutes make a a difference?

So is the difference between an A and a B IQ worth 30 entire practice minutes? Assuming you only practice your primary O/D 5 min each? It sure doesn't sound like it to me, although I suppose it depends if you recruit based on potential or current ability.

There is a big difference in performance between an A and a B.  BUT this is all about tradeoffs.

I've run some teams with a combo, but usually had one be the primary.  There is some game planning advantage to being able to run full court press or half court and then zone.  You go mix and match.  You can do some creative doubling.

One question is how old your team is and will be.  Another question is how much potential your players have.

In general, I think the better approach is one offense and one defense, but one can make interesting progress in SOME cases with a hybrid.

Is the difference between a B and A the same as from C to B? And are there varying ranges of an A+ IQ, like there is with prestige?

I think the impact of IQ is linear. Growth isn't but I think the impact on game play is.

I have no idea if IQ caps or if there is an "unlimited" range of A+'s.   Not all A+'s are the same but I think the range is more like 97-100 than 97-140.
