16 x 16, version 20 (modified) - Full Topic

This theme is very is similar to the popular 16x16 theme that bheid408 created and that I now administer. Except instead of 16 owners each nominating one player, two different groups of 8 owners will nominate 2 players each - one hitter and one pitcher. So there will be 16 players nominated in group 1 and 16 different players nominated in group 2. This theme uses the 16-team league format and each group will be placed into it's own league (NL or AL).  Note that the players nominated can be from either league - so in other words, if you end up in Group 1, that doesn't mean you have to nominate NL-only players.

16 x 16, Version 20 - Modified
1920-2015 Seasons Are Available
Salary Cap --> $120 Million
DH = NO
Playing Time Rule for Nominated Players = Yes
Minimum Salary Rule for Nominated Players = Yes

This is a 16 team league. Each owner will nominate 1 hitter and 1 pitcher that has played between 8 and 11 seasons* in their career. The player must have played at least 8 but no more than 11 total seasons, regardless of which years and which league those seasons occurred. (This eliminates any overlap of the 12x12 theme). Of those 8-11 seasons, at least 8 seasons must fall within the season range of 1920 to 2015. Example #1: If a player played for one team every year from 1911-1930, he's ineligible for this league since he's played 20 years overall (even though he's played in 11 years between 1920-30).  Example #2: If a player played for one team every year from 1918-1926, he's ineligible for this league since he's only played 7 seasons between the years 1920-1926 (even though he's played a total of 9 years).  Now if this player happened to play on two different teams in 1926, that would count as two and he would then be eligible.

* Note that if a player played 7 seasons, but played for 2 different teams in one season, that counts as 8 seasons for purposes of this theme (you'll understand why after reading the remaining rules).  Similarly, if a player played 11 different seasons, but one of those seasons was with 2 teams, that counts as 12 seasons and the player is not eligible for this league.

Playing Time Rule: In order to be eligible for the playoffs, your nominated hitter must either reach his PA/162 total during the regular season or play in all 162 games (if he has a very high PA/.162 total).  Your pitcher must reach his IP/162 total.  So if you are going to nominate a crappy player just for his stud teammate(s), you are going to have to play your crappy player.

Minimum Salary Rule - The seasons you select for the two players you nominate each must have a salary of at least $1 million.  This rule is to reduce the "screw everybody else" strategy by taking the one cheap season of a crappy expensive guy (otherwise known as the Earl Whitehill rule - thanks calhoop).

A regular lineup will be used for nominations so we'll need C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF, OF, OF and 8 Pitchers. For players who played more than one position, there will be some leeway on which position he will qualify at.

Upon signup, post your two nominated players (but do not list the years - site-mail me the years you want to use). You may change your mind on your selection up until the last player is chosen and I post the draft orders.  As far as which league you will be playing in, it will be based on first-come, first-serve, until there is a position duplication.  Assume the first five people who sign up select a C, 1B, OF, 3B, OF, they will all fall into group 1.  If the sixth person who signs up selects another 1B, he will drop into Group 2.  If the seventh person selects a 2B, they go back to Group 1, etc.  If you sign up but don't select a player right away, the group you end up is based on when you select the player.  The division alignment within each league will be random.

Once all 16 owners have chosen their players, I'll post the seasons selected and the draft orders. We'll have a 14 round draft to select the other 7 seasons each of the nominated hitters and pitchers. Draft order for each round will be based on the cumulative salary going into that round (lowest salary drafts first).

HERE'S WHERE STRATEGY COMES INTO PLAY
The remaining 9 roster spots must be filled with teammates of your drafted players. These teammate slots are like gold, so use them wisely. They must be from the same season of your drafted player... no twisting. Nominated players (within the same league) cannot be used as a teammate. If you draft a player season with 2+ teams, you can choose which of the four versions of that season you want to use (TeamA/Full, TeamA/Partial, TeamB/Full or TeamB/Partial), and you can only take teammates from that team. Only one Team A and one Team B season may be chosen (i.e., if I take TeamA/Partial, TeamA/Full is also off the board). This is how a player with 7 seasons, including one multi-team season can be allowed. Or similarly, a player with 6 seasons, w/ two multi-team seasons is allowed, etc..

When the draft is completed, you will have 16 drafted players (including your 2 original nominations) and you will then add 9 teammates (chosen from the 16 teams of those 16 drafted players) to get a complete roster of 25 players. You can use more than one teammate per drafted player and many drafted players won't have teammates represented.

*** A popular modification was made in version 4 - the addition of a salary cap. This theme will use the standard $120 million salary cap.  Be very careful in your player selection during the draft. In the late stages of the draft, you may find yourself stuck having to roster a high-priced stiff that would put you over the cap, forcing you to downgrade one of your key teammates.

Here's the best way to determine if a player is eligible.

1. For hitters, click on ALL position and type in the players name in the search screen
2, Min Games = ALL: 0 and check the box for "Include Secondary Positions"
3. For pitchers, click on P
4. For hitters/pitchers, set Season Type = Full/Combined
4. Count how many seasons are shown --> This must equal 8, 9, 10 or 11

Then change the year range to 1920-2015 and make sure the total is still 8, 9, 10 or 11.

Clarification:

Since the two groups are separate and unique, it is possible to use a nominated player from the opposite group as a teammate.

I am not understanding why the two leagues.

Will there be separate AL and NL drafts with eight owners in each with different player pools to pick from?

What if you pick the second first base man and then change to the third OF? Will you then go into group one or stay in group two?
12/16/2015 3:29 PM
Yes - there will be two separate drafts.  It's not AL and NL only players though.  The owners from Group 1 will be put in the NL and the owners from Group 2 will be put in the AL.  So the 16 players from Group 1 will be drafted by just Group 1 owners and have no impact on what happens in Group 2, and vice versa.

If somebody switches players (i.e., from the second 1B to third OF) then yes, they would switch into Group 1.  I understand there may be reasons why somebody would prefer being in Group 1 or 2 but regardless, you are still competing against the other 11 owners in your group using the same player pool.

But if you are already in group 2 (with your second 1B) and the person with the first 1B switches to a different position, you will not be moved into group 1.
