Where would you use him? Topic

Just for fun. Throw a name and a stat line out there...then sound off. Where(what park) would you use him?

Few walks, lots of Ks, low OAV - VERY low OAV, good WHIP if not a historic one - I think he could be used in a moderate hitters' park - Ebbets Field for example. any place that allow hits but keeps HRs down, or in a neutral park.

Actually the 3+ bb/9 was my concern. A normalized hr/9 under .5 isn't too bad...

How's your defense?

I don't have a team drafted. I have used the '66 Peters but never the '67...just curious...I would probably draft average or better infield defense. I was thinking of trying him in a 3 man rotation to make 45-50 starts. With the 10% I should get 280 innings from him with no noticeable fatigue issues...a cheap spot starter would give him an extra day here and there...I am about tired of using deadball pitchers, although they are still a good value. I am considering trying him in AT&T...if I do, I will draft above avg defense.

The 311 inning Cy Morgan has similar bb/9, and it usually doesn't hurt him. This would be an OL team, just for testing purposes. At that level you don't normally see too many high obp lineups...I just want to try some of those tweeners, the guys not normally used in 3 man rotations, 260-280 innings.. The pen would be beefed up to deal with some additional innings. I'm gonna be happy with 6 innings per start, at least from him.

disagree with your "few walks" comment. In fact, his bb/9 is higher than I'll draft when given a choice. I also don't consider his OAV "very" low, (it's normalized to .212 which is good, but not extraordinarily low IMO). Given his 0.52 HR/9 (49% better than average for 1967), I'd put Peters in a park where his walks will do minimal damage... further help his good OAV by keeping hits, especially extra base hits, down a bit. I'd like him at Griffith, Edison, Braves Field, Jacobs... that sort of venue.

Edison is a park i haven't tried in awhile. Negates doubles/triples. Perhaps plays like a watered down Yankee III..,there are a few good hitters that go yard that don't hit many doubles, that's for sure. Recently Cy Williams hit 68 hr and 28 doubles...what a weird stat line...that was in GABP.

Depending on the league he's more like a Tiger Stadium/Kingdome guy for me. He's going to walk people so you need - for 1B. At a higher cap I'd worry more about the HRs but in an OL where most people draft Vince Colemans anyway, he'd be fine.

redwingscup,

You know that I learn from you often and respect your views and knowledge. But yes, we disagree:

A .212 OAV and 3 walks a game translates to 7 hits and 3 walks over 27 outs. That is a good outing as a pitcher's average.

Is it Sandy Koufax on a good day? No. But it translates to 10 base runners over nine innings. Getting more than 3 runs off a pitcher having a day like that is not easy. It happens, and worse, but it is not easy.

Yes, in an OL anything that is not the very best WHIPs in history are suicide. Which is why OLs suck. Or a big reason. I spent around 40 pages on an entire thread in this forum a few weeks ago showing just how rare WHIPs under 1.00 have ever been in history, very rare. These numbers add up to a good pitcher.

Thanks Italy, and just to note, I really enjoyed reading (and re-reading) your thread regarding the rarity of < 1.00 Whips. It was edifying (well, maybe not morally instructive, but certainly intellectually so).

It's not that I don't think '67 Peters can be good. He can be and has been for me. My comments were based on the question concerning what park best suits his numbers. I wanted to make the point that his propensity to walk guys (I figure about 4/9ip, which tracks closely to his performance history in OLs) would be helped by using a park that is at best neutral (Edison & Griffith) or "-" for 1B (Jacobs and Braves). All four of these parks tend to suppress XBH as well. My calcs show he is going to allow 11-12 runners over 9 innings... pretty close to your figures. A lot depends on the composition of the lineups he would face and many gamers (including yours truly) often look for players who have 14-20 BB/100/PAs. Maybe these sorts of higher walk guys aren't prevalent in OLs. I don't play in them often so really don't know from other than what I read. Then again, the posed question didn't limit the question to an OL ball park.

So maybe we aren't disagreeing so much on his potential value, but are rather assessing different questions. Just a few ramblings off the top of my head. Now I need to get back to work (and go pick up my tax return). RWC

Good points, I don't disagree. My point about a very modestly pro-offense park was that he would not be an excessive risk for such a place, though your concern about how that might work is well-founded. A close judgment call. A neutral park would certainly be better.

I will try him in Yankee II. 0,-1,-1,0,0

That should curb the xbh. I will use '09 Cy Morgan and '09 Earl Moore and compare. All 3 are bb/9 3.1 - 3.25.

keep us posted. What type of league are you in (Theme, OL, salary cap?). Depending on how the other players build their teams, you could find these starters all around 4/bb9
