Practice minutes example for newbie ? Topic

Newbie here, In Div. 3, How many minutes do you spend on Team Practice ? How many offensive formations do you practice ? Maybe i will just tell you where i am at and you tell me if i can be successful. I am spending only 80 minutes of a possible 180 minutes on Team Practice. I will Practice 3 offensive formations. Two formations at 10 minutes each and 1 formation at 16 minutes. I will do the same exact thing on defense and practice special teams for 8 minutes. Can this practice plan be successful ?

Too many formations, IMO...

Really, hmm. I thought i wouldn't have enough formations. So if you are not practicing 3 formations, could one make the assumption that you are a running team ? How many formations do you practice ? Are you a running team ?

15 minutes on O and 15 minutes on D....you don't need multiple formations....pick one! 10-12 points to special teams and the rest to players. This game is all about recruiting and player development....O and D are pretty much all the same...just different personnel.

That is a very unique strategy. It would appear that you put the developmental emphasis on the players. Anticipating having the best players execute the one formation to it's fullest extent....ok....... might you be wasting a little of the Positional Practice time on players who may have already maxed out their potential ?

Especially in the lower divisions, 3, 2 and 1AA it "is" about developing the players.
Also , remember this is a game within itself and not real football. Most coaches find a formation or 2 that works for them and stick with it. I would venture to say most NC's are won by coaches practicing 1 Off and 1 Def formation..

There is an established owner in the division i have just joined. His team ranks as follows: Coaches #9 and Press #11. It would strongly appear that he is practicing 4 defensive formations and 3 offensive formations. However in light of the information that has been presented here, i have changed to the following practice plan..... I reduced the Team Practice minutes from 80 to 70 and reduced the amount of formations from 7 to 5, 2 offensive formations 1 @ 20 min. the other @ 12 min. and 2 defensive formations @ 15 min. each along with 8 min. for special teams. I don't think this early into the job will i be recruiting the players needed to only run 1 formation each. Thanks for everyone's input.

From my experience I've noticed most of the top teams only practice 1 Off formation and 1 Defensive formation or 2 and 1 or 2 and 2 at the most, i use to practice 3 Offensive Formations and 2 defensive formations each at 9 minutes and special teams at 8 minutes i had some success like getting to round 3 of the tourney but never winning a National Championship, I recently dropped one of my offensive formations and go 2 and 2 with 12 minutes on each offensive and 11 on 1 defensive and 9 on the other, I just won my first National Championship last season I also looked at my players attributes and adjusted their practice to what they need to develop for example if my WR who play the majority of minutes are 55+ in speed there's no need to practice them being DEEP i set it to possession so they get better at route running, catching and blocking their speed will still grow due to the automatic settings in DIII. So my conclusion is less formations and more practice time to develop players.
