16 Team League - 4/4 Format

I am currently running 3 different Progressives and the first version of this idea is probably my favorite of all 3 so I decided to give another version of the same thing a shot at becoming reality. The first version we are using seasons from 1970-2020. This version is from 1910-1960. Only the 16 original Franchises will be used.

All of the seasons from 1910 to 1960 will be used at the same time. Seasons after 1960 are eligible to use if/when a player progresses into those seasons. Seasons before 1910 are eligible if that player played for the same Franchise in 1910.

Initial Draft:
We will use 2 Franchises to ensure everyone can field a decent roster. 1 for the 8 NL Teams and 1 for the 8 AL Teams to ensure we have a big enough pool of players to draft from. Each league will then have a 25 round draft, random order for round 1 then serpentine. Having 8 Teams do their own separate draft will make the drafts go quicker. We will start Off-the-Clock and only go On-the-Clock if either draft stalls out. I have done the draw for the 2 Initial Teams and it is in the post below. We'll use the Giants for the NL and the Cubs for the AL. First/come First/serve. Pick 1 at signup. I will take the last spot.

Roster construction and Player Eligibility:
All the Players that played for the Franchise/s drawn are eligible. It doesn't matter at what point of their career they played for them. They will start with the first season they played for that Franchise. If you take an AL spot using the Cubs, you could draft Pete Alexander for Season 1. He'd start with his first season with the Cubs 1918, skipping his Phillies seasons since the Phillies weren't drawn. He would then progress from 1918 to 1926. In the total scheme of eligibility, each player is a completely different player for each Franchise they played for. Example:Alexander has 3 different versions since he played for 3 different Franchises, the Phillies, Cubs and Cardinals. Each Franchise has to be drawn for that version of him to be eligible to use. If a player played for the Franchise drawn before 1910 they are eligible to use as long as they still played for that Franchise in 1910. Example: Ed Reulbach played for the Cubs in 1910 but started his career with them in 1905 so you would start him with his 1905 season.

Free Agency:
Each season all of the players listed on the Award page for MVP, CY Young, Fireman, and Silver Slugger will become Free Agents. They will be included in the draft for the upcoming season and if you draft them they will progress from the season they just finished using. You can draft Free Agents you lost back onto your team if they are still available when you pick. If they are not drafted they will be removed from the league. If a player is a Free Agent and does not have any seasons remaining of the Franchise he is currently playing for, then he will be an automatic Cut. This Free Agency is different from the first version. It will allow the best players to be shared throughout the league and should help to provide a lot of parity each season.

Subsequent Drafts:
After Season 1, I will do a random draw every season to determine the one new Franchise we will add players from. We won't use any previously drawn Franchises a 2nd time until all other Franchises have been used once. Draft order will be random amongst the teams not making the playoffs and the 4 playoff teams will draft 13-16th based on W/L record. I will draw the new Franchise for the next season before Keepers/Cuts are due. For the Draft, I will only list the Free Agents in a player pool. There won't be a pool listed for players from the newly drawn Franchise. They will only be blacklisted as they are chosen so it will be each owners responsibility to look up which players can be drafted in the Draft Center.

Keepers/Cuts:
There is no limit to Keepers or Cuts and they are due by the end of the season. Once a player reaches the last season they played for a Franchise, they must be Cut. If a player played for more then 1 Franchise and his next Franchise in progression is drawn to use, he still must be Cut as that version of him is considered a new player. If a player played for the same Franchise more than once, meaning they played for a different Franchise in-between stints for the same Franchise, you can jump ahead and use those seasons also. Example:Wally Schang played for the A's twice, from 1913 to 1917 and again in 1930. You would start with his 1913 A's season and after 1917, (his last A's season the 1st time) you can jump ahead to use his 1930 A's season, the 2nd time he played for them.

Multiple Versions:
You can use the partial or combined version of a player as long as the version you choose is from the correct Franchise.

Trades:
Must pass the usual 6 vetos during the season. Off-season Trades are allowed without veto process unless 1 owner not involved in the trade opposes. The trade in question will then be voted on and 6 "No" votes will cancel it. You can Trade Draft Picks up to 1 year ahead.

AAA:
2 Below Average fictitious for trade balancing only.

IR/DL:
There is no IR/DL, Players just advance to the next available season.

Clones:
Are allowed. Since each version of a player from a different Franchise is considered a completely different player we will allow Clones.

BallParks:
Any, can change at any time.

No Salary Cap
No DH
Injuries Off
Alignment will be the same each season

I'm really intrigued by this, my biggest concern is with a 16 team league, I feel like the talent levels will be extremely high. While there's uniqueness in some of the leagues rules, 20-24 teams would definitely make it a little harder to have 16 super teams.

I'm in with the Giants, thanks

Ryno I don’t think teams will be as loaded as you think. Remember you would only be drafting all Cubs or all Giants. Doing a little research:

For hitters I defined Superstar as having an ops over1.000 with a minimum of 450 AB.

There were 5 Cubs and 5 Giants. Some players had more than one season.

For pitchers I defined superstar as having an era+ over 150 and an Oav under .225. Minimum of 180 innings.

There were 7 Cubs and 13 Giants. Some players had more than one season.

Cubs owners will get 1 or 2 superstars, GiAnts towners 2 or 3. Because no one does these stats every year by season it will be less.

I'm not the restrictive when thinking of teams being super teams. I consider Bancroft for the Giants as a superstar, as he gives 4 great years at SS, But you may be right that it wouldn't be as bad as I originally thought

16 Teams to start is almost too many as the first version some owners were short PA's for catcher. (might have been there own fault)
Average payroll for season 2 in the first version was $85.5M. Yes, Teams will get stronger as we add more Franchises. We can always expand to 20 or 24 Teams if there is enough interest after a couple seasons.

On the fence Babe Ruth will destroy this league.Someone will have a guy for 12 years that absolutely dominated baseball.Plus we have dead ball pitchers. Thanks for te invite but I will pass.

According to this leagues rules Ruth may be a free agent every year .

The 10 MVP's and 18 Silver Sluggers each season, which will probably include Ruth, will be Free Agents every year. He will be on multiple rosters thru his career. Same goes for the CY Young and Fireman winners which will undoubtably include the best deadballers, Mathewson, Alexander, Joss, WJohnson, etc....

If anyone wants access to the league forum for the first edition of this theme i can give them access to check things out. We are currently drafting for season 3 of that progressive. We started with the Phillies and Royals in Season 1. Added the Mets in Season 2 and are adding the White Sox in Season 3.

yed but his team can spend a 1st round pick to resign him
6/6/2021 2:57 PM
plus you still have dead ball pitchers. If the league ran from 130 1980 I would be more interested
6/6/2021 2:58 PM
Jeff I understand about the dead ballers, but note this does not say you can spend a first rounder to get someone back. It says when you draft you can bring someone back if they are still available.
