Belle Turnaround Challenge Topic

Belle budgets for Season 13 today, and we have what may be an interesting sub-plot developing.

2 of our new owners, who both took over teams in the dumper, challenged each other to a "Turnaround Challenge". Works like this:

Winner will be whoever scores more than 1200 pts in a season first, starting in season 13 (with the scoring based on 5 pts. for ML win, 3 pts. for AAA and AA win, and 2 pts. for HiA, LoA, and Rookie win) AND whose ML team has at least 81 wins in that same season. Both objectives must be meet in the same season for a winner to be declared and if no winner, the challenge will continue on to the next season.

Our 2 competitors are:

tk21775, managing the Jacksonville Jokers, and
Skidd22, running the Pittsburgh Alleghenys

Who knows where this will go, hut hopefully we have some interesting commentary and maybe learn something about how to turn around teams.

so the minor league wins are worth twice as much as ML?

sounds like a f'ed up scoring system to me.

Yeah. I'd make ML wins worth 8 and each minor league win, regardless of level, worth 1. But your game, your rules.

i'd make minor league wins worth 0

The competitors are certainly free to change the scoring. I think they were looking for something that encouraged building the entire organization, rather than just trying to create a year or 2 window for ML success, but we'll have to hear from them.

Any scoring system that encourages owners to stock their minor leagues with ringers is a bad idea.

That's not to say that minor league wins are not desirable. It's just that a scoring system that over-rewards them will encourage people to game the system in order to get cheap points.

The scoring was set up to make the challenge of building up the entire system, not just the ML team for a one and done trying to win. The second objective which states that the ML team must have a record of at least 81 wins to go along with the 1200 pts. helps ensure that the ML level does remain the most important level. Basically if every team plays .500 ball, the scoring should be around 1201 but the ML wins must at least be at 81 or above or it doesn't matter how many points the minor teams scored.

I think some of you guys are missing the point here.

First off DEANOD: Read the rules again ML wins are worth 2.5 times as much as lower minor league wins and 1.67 times AA and AAA wins. We also have a minimum of 81 wins at the ML level.

TECWRG: Nobody is going to be stocking minor leagues with ringers. We are both gentlemen who have decided to try and turn a multi-season endeavor into a friendly competition. One of the added benefits of this is that our teams will not suffer from minor league fatigue (one of my particular pet peeves) at any time. Hopefully this will rub off on the rest of the league,.

A ML win is worth more than any minor league win.

tk21775 and skidd22, that sounds like a very interesting season ahead for you. I think your scoring system weighted in favor of the majors but considering every level is a really good idea.
8/27/2009 2:06 PM
um, i read the rules.

there are five levels of minor leagues. one major league level. hope that clarifies my point.
8/27/2009 2:25 PM
actually, the entire point system seems to be a weird, arbitrary tiebreaker.

win 81 games in S1 and have your minor league teams cumulatively a few games above .500 and you win the challenge

it's pretty much impossible to not hit the threshold by S2, so it basically becomes a race to an 81 win season at that point.

A freindly wager (no money or GCs) to keep it interesting for teams unlikely to be competing for ML playoffs seems like a great idea to me.
8/27/2009 2:40 PM
I think it should be make the playoffs, not win 81 games.
8/27/2009 2:44 PM
so you bet each other, what, jelly beans?

sounds sweet!
