Who Would You Start @ SS? Topic

I'm torn between the speedy SS with great defense and a sub-par bat:

Gregory Moore

Or the slow SS with decent defense and a decent bat:

Louie Maxwell

Who would you choose to be your everyday starter?

My first reaction would be to start Maxwell, with Moore available as a PR / defensive replacement.

But in over 950 plate appearances in the majors, Moore's OPS is almost identical to Maxwell's. An overachiever, but I'd give him the starter's job and give him the opportunity to lose it.

I would put moore at short. I would put Maxwell at third if I didn't have anything better. Maxwell looks pretty good. You ought to be able to find a place for him.

I would play moore at SS, and put maxwell at 3B as well

This is my current lineup:

1. (RF) Brian Posey
2. (LF) Ben Buckley
3. (1B) Vicente Gomez
4. (CF) Jonathan Cummings
5. (3B) Julio De La Vega
6. (2B) Brian Adcock
7. (C) Wascar Aguilar
8. (SS) Gregory Moore

Offensively, the lineup seems pretty solid from 1-6 where I think I can afford to replace Maxwell's offense with Moore's glove and speed...especially with Moore overachieving the way he's been. I currently have Maxwell spot starting to rest players at every position whenever possible to get his bat in the lineup.

It's a pretty decent baserunning lineup... I'd play Moore and be at least a "4" on the bases. If my other 7 guys were slow sluggers I might play Maxwell and set basestealing to "1."

Yeah, I've got the bases set to "5" with a 73.3% team success rate. We could always do better...not too shabby though. :-)

I guess if by not too shabby you mean "costing my team runs" then I agree. Unless you are succeeding 75% of the time you aren't helping your team.

Why not flip a coin?

i'm not a big SB guy at all, but the break even point for SB % varies based upon the potency of your offense. in a weak offense without any serious HR threats, 73.3% will actually create more runs. in a high OPS environment, it will cost runs.

OK, 75% is 1.7% more than the 73.3 success rate I have. I shuffle my settings throughout the season depending on who I'm playing. If I'm up against a team that has a catcher with a strong, accurate arm, I'll bring my settings down to 3. If I see the team has a defensively weak C, then I'll shift it to 4 or 5. It all depends...
