Coors Field Advice Topic

Hi gang,

After playing it safe in several pitcher's parks I decided to try a team at Coors Field. Does anyone have any advice for the types of pitchers best suited for this extreme environment?

Thanks!

groundball pitchers and A+ defense.

Control. No need for extra baserunners.

Splits, GB/FB more important than control, IMO.

I disagree. Feel free to try a poor control guy every now and again - you're only giving up a walk where you were pretty likely to give up a hit (or an xbhit) so not a top priority for me.

for offense - high contact guys can get you some good value mileage in a nice offensive park. dont skimp on pop though.

Put free baserunners on before you give up the inevitable hit. Sounds like a good strategy to me.

I'm embarrassed to admit this, but I haven't paid any attention to GB/FB splits on pitchers. What is their significance and what is an acceptable range for quality?

Since the ball travels easier at coors a flyball pitcher is likelier to give up more home runs than a groundball pitcher

I assume this to be true no matter what venue the game is being played.

You wouldnt want a guy with a low GB/FB unless he was dominant everywhere else. Even then, he'd struggle to pitch at 4.0 era.

So 80 would be a good number and 50 not so good?

As with every rating, 50 = 50th percentile, or exactly average for ML.

> 50 will lead to more ground balls.

Thanks. This is very helpful. What would extremes of 20 and 80 lead to?

80 > 50 ... more ground balls than average

20 < 50 ... fewer ground balls than average

That's not to say that a guy will 100 won't give up any fly balls (or HRs), it's just a rating that impacts where a batted ball is likely (or unlikely) to go.
