Lunatic Fielding Coach Topic

Just came across this in one of my leagues and though I would share since I've never seen anything like it.

Prospect A

Prospect B

Notice anything odd in the (counter)development of these players?

Now, this is the team's Fielding Coach

Appalling? Yes. However, considering the widely held belief that Fielding Coaches are far too scarce at present, I think this is a bit harsh. A poor coach should certainly stunt the development of his players but not outright sabotage them. How does this even make any sense in terms of plausible realism?

You don't think that a poor FC might teach bad habits that could regress the development of prospects?

I think what you're seeing is reasonable.

Not really, Tec. Nobody takes piano lessons and then comes out a worse piano player than they were to begin with.

The results are reasonable, considering the coach's ratings. What is unreasonable is the idea that there are only 20 capable fielding instructors on a planet of seven billion people.

Kad, the regression of ratings has been happening since day one of HBD.

Kad, Tec is right. If my real-life pitching coach was teaching me wrong mechanics I would get worse(granted I would not listen to him because I know better).

Agreed, I saw the same thing happen when a guy in my league somehow accidently hired a hitting coach to be a pitching coach. The pitching ratings took a beating.
12/30/2009 9:25 PM
Why is that guy a fielding coach for any level? I wouldn't want him coaching little league.

Hire a 50 coach and you'll be fine. Every world has 32+ coaches at 50+. But, if we want to make sure everyone gets 80+ FI, I'd like to get some better pitchers on a couple of my teams. If everyone gets a top flight FI, I don't know why we all can't have top flight pitching staffs. And excellent fielding SS who can hit!!!

Yes that is the problem with HBD, not enough SS that can hit .300+ and slug .500+ while stealing 40+ bases while earning their gold glove. Dilute the talent pool and give everybody one...

Same holds true for FI coaches. If you want a good FI coach, adjust your coaching budget and shell out the cash. If not, quit your f-ing crying and be happy with 50 FI IQ.

On the other hand, both players 1st pitch improved by a point!

At this point, I think he'd be ecstatic with a 50 FI IQ coach.

There's a problem here, but it's not with the engine-- if you choose to hire a PC as your FC you get what you deserve (in fact, the engine HAS to work this way to assure that players don't steal an advantage by naming PCs as FCs without fielding penalty). However, this was almost certainly an auto-hire, and the game should be corrected to prevent this type of auto-hire, for two reasons:

1) In the real world, even if you were being cheap, you would be able to tell the difference between a crappy FC and a crappy PC to hire as your FC. The sim's auto-hiring a guy with a 40 or even 30 glove rating is potentially realistic; hiring one with a 9 glove rating isn't.

2) This may be an abandonment, and it just kills the abandoned franchise for the next, potentially dedicated owner to have this happen to this organization. Hiring a crappy rookie league PC as the FC is not good for the game.

Coach hiring is probably better now than it ever has been, but it still needs some help.

1) Maybe. Can't really disagree too much. But there's a fine line between rewarding an owner for doing nothing and harming the team unnecessarily.

2) Not really. I took over a similar situation in HJ. A lot of the fielders had regressed. But, due to the nature of HBD, you don't have to keep them and play them for the next 10 seasons. And the regression didn't destroy the legit BL players.

I scrtewed up in my budgeting this season in FYC and ended up with only 500k to sign a fiedling coach, naturally ending up with the worst one in the league - a guy with a 57 fielding rating. I am still seeing improvements in fielding. You can get a dirt cheap Fielding Coach and still not get penalized. In fact, I am starting to think that I have been overvaluing Fielding Coaches in other leagues.
