0 power effective ML hitter? Topic

can a player with a power rating of 0 ever be an effective ML hitter?

Phil Torres is the player in question.

It's tough, but if he plays a premium defensive position (like Torres) and gets on base, then he can still be valuable. He could potentially hit .300/.350/.320 against righties.

Not a problem...maybe 10 doubles and no homers in 500 AB's but his OBP against righties should be pretty good. Maybe a no. 2 hitter against RHP and no. 8 against LHP. Likely not an all-star but his glove warrants making the bigs. I've had a number of 0 power guys do well for me in the ML.

He will be pretty damn terrible against ies.

cool, thanks a lot. Torres doesn't have as good of a contact rating as those guys but it looks like he should be able to play. I need him mostly for his glove.

You would like a guy with very low power to at least have good speed and BR ability. Torres has the speed, but his rather low BR will keep him from being a premier basestealer or leadoff man.

his glove makes it worth it, assuming you don't have a better option, such as a very good hitter with slightly worse fielding ratings.

Typically 0 power guys have underproduced in my experience. Really, I've found that most guys under 30 aren't worth a roster spot (at least not for their bat...maybe for their glove). Having said that, the new power settings may make 0 power guys more valuable than they were in the past.

He is a perfect #8 (NL) or #9 (AL) player. His glove is enough to keep him in the lineup full-time and against righties he will get on-base enough to score more runs that your typical bottom of the order player.

This guy will be useful against righties. I would not play him against ies. He will be a plus defender at any other position than SS and he'll be pretty good at SS too.

platoon him with a good hitter against ies. he'll be fine. or just put him last in the lineup against them.

I have a guy with 0 power named Orval Yeats. In his first major league season (platooning against righties) he had 488 at-bats and hit .309. The next year he also platooned, but his BA plummetted to .257. This season he hit .250 over only 16 at-bats before I sent him to AAA to replace him with a slick-fielding SS, so the sample size may still not be big enough to tell which of those seasons represents the real Yeats. But since my guy has 100 speed and great baserunning, he was able to leg out grounders which really helped him. Your guy also has good speed so he may see a similar effect.
