I was thinking the other day - what if HD added media timeouts on the first stoppage every 4 minutes (the way it's done in real life)? The more I thought about it, I think it could have a big impact on the game.

Those timeouts last, what - 2 minutes? From a programming standpoint, all you'd need to do is simulate 2 minutes of rest for each player during the stoppage. From a game play standpoint, it would allow your starters to play more effectively for more minutes and thus allow you to effectively shorten your bench if you chose to do so. I think this would make the game MUCH more lifelike than it is now, where you essentially have to roll two lines like a hockey game.

Thoughts?

Dumbest idea I've heard today.

But on the bright side, it's still early.

A lot of games do not have media time outs. I cannot recall who it was but one of the coaches of a team from a small conference was on a national radio show last season just before his conference championship game that was to be aired on TV. He said it was the first time all season they had the TV time outs and it was going to change his rotations.

All of my games are filmed with a hand held camera and televised via closed circuit to the three subscribers. If any of them want a timeout they just hit 'Pause'.

We could add CBS media timeouts, where every timeout they take a full media time...

This I did not know. I thought that any broadcasted game - even if not televised - got these TOs. Thank you for correcting me. Out of curiosity, do you remember if the coach you're referring to was a D1 coach?

CBS football games are even worse. Nothing worse than sitting in the Swamp and the game is on CBS... the timeouts take atleast 3 times longer than if it was on ESPN..

At least all d1 teams have 'media' time outs.

I remember various references to the longer timeouts in the postseason changing rotations
1/11/2010 10:07 AM
mets, I do think they're longer in postseason (and they're probably also longer for regular season nationally televised games) but they do exist in those other games (at least in D1) even if it's just a radio broadcast. Every AD's got to pay the bills somehow.

Just to reiterate, this idea is not intended to be a cosmetic thing. I've always hated that players in HD tire more quickly than they do in real life, even with staminas in the 90s. I'm pretty sure most real life college starters average closer to 30 minutes a game than the 24-26 they seem to in HD. This was a way I thought might be simple to implement (though I could certainly be wrong about that) that would have the net effect of allowing starters be more productive for longer periods, thus also letting you shorten your bench - something that most real life teams do in one way or another from time to time and something that's been discussed here on several occasions.

NCAA Rule 5.13 covers timeouts. In summary these are the rules:

Each team is allowed four 75-second and two 30-second timeouts per regulation game that is not televised. In televised college games, each team is granted one 60-second timeout and four 30-second timeouts per game in addition to the 4 media timeouts each half.

In the postseason, the televised rules apply even if the game is not televised.

The rulebook goes into great depth regarding when a timeout may be taken or charged and there are specific clock times for the media timeouts. It is very complex.

Sounds like televised games have the same amount of time outs just in different time frames as the media timeouts would be longer than the 75 seconds I would assume.

Not a bad idea. Especially if in the DI tourney it allowed you to play your starters a bit longer.

Maybe you should get extra recruiting bucks for being in nationally televised games, lol.
