Add this to the list of schools that don't match WIS. On July 1, New Orleans will move from DI to DIII. Budget cuts after Katrina are to blame.

I'm not suggesting WIS make any changes. I'm just reporting the story

That's sad. I don't think it was too long ago that they were a semi-consistent NT team (in the early or mid 90's when they had the other Ervin Johnson playing center).

Wow, I think Birmingham Southern did this a couple years back...I don't understand the slide from D1 to D3 though...why not D2?

scholarships

University of Seattle in real life is DIV I Independent. On this game their DIV II I think Great NW conference. Seattle is DIV I team IRL.

D3 is a 0 scholarship level. all the kids pay to play (or get financial aid). and UNO is currently averaging 477 bodies in the stands for home mens basketball games. i played d2 college baseball in MN...and i bet we averaged close to 400 fans per game. no way that cuts it in D1, and with crowd support at that level, theres almost no way they can sustain a sports program with scholarships.

add in that we know that basketball and football are the two money making college sports (and UNO doesnt play football), there is no sport to hold up the revenue of the program with basketball doing so poorly. a move to d3 makes sense.

Does anybody know where Bucknell is located in WIS? I looked at one point and couldn't find it.

Bucknell's in the Ivy League in WIS, as opposed to the Patriot League IRL. The Ivy's got a few teams that don't match RL: Them, Boston U, and Duquesne.

D1 Ivy League

If your ever looking for a school just go to the RPI by School and sort by the name. You can find it easier that way. Only thing you have to do it figure out if it is D1, D2, or D3

yup, i lived there from 87-97 and went to many UNO games. A Friend of mine was a friend of Tim Floyd's and we went out to eat a couple times. I really think he was a good guy (and an excellent basektball coach) who lost his way. taking the bulls job was the beginning of the end for him. that was such a bad fit... As much as i respect Floyd, he just never seemed the nba type to me. and then the usc thing, ugh, a damn shame is what it is.

anyway, watching those floyd coached teams was really a treat. talk about a blue collar team, those dudes brought the lunch pails and punched the clock. lots of fun. and for a couple of years when tulane (perry clark) was good and lsu was good, the bayou was a real hoops hotbed.

thinking of perry clark's tulane teams reminded me how he ran basically a two platoon team where the five subs all came in together and they even had some special name. they came in and pressed the hell out of the other team, and only stayed in for a couple of minutes at a time. they were fun too. i know that you can argue against that type of sub pattern, but im kinda suprised that you just never seem to see it. one of the upsides that clark was able to take advantage of was great comraderie and pride among that second unit.

good memories, sorry to see uno drop out of D1 ... thoughits easy to see why.

I'm not sure it's really scholarships as much as the REAL costs of running a D1 or D2 program. After all schollies don't cost much money. Giving a kid free tuition isn't the same as giving them $20,000.

More likely, it's about major reductions in travel cost, personnel cost, and still wanting to remain competitive.

"The future of athletics at New Orleans is in question. The athletic department faces a $1 million dollar annual shortfall. An increased athletic fee was proposed to make up the short fall but was voted down by students in April 2009. The university competed in 15 sports before Katrina and the subsequent drop in enrollment. It now fields seven sports teams. NCAA Division I requires schools to field at least 14 teams. The university faces the options of dropping all athletics at the university, changing divisions or raising millions for the department in the private sector.

University of New Orleans announced on January 20th, 2010 that it is in the process of transitioning to Division III, and has voluntarily withdrawn its membership from the Sun Belt Conference."
