The BEST way to redshirt a player Topic

Okay so I have played like 20 hd seasons and it may be surprising but I have NEVER redshirted a player before, mainly because when Im recruiting I am scared to lose that player and have to spend more money. This year I need to redshirt so can anyone please give me some insight on what is the proper way to redshirt a player during recruiting so he wont lose his work ethic, thanks!

The same cycle that you inform him of the redshirt, throw in a home visit (and a campus visit too if you can afford it). Often that will soften the blow to your status with a recruit (although they will still sometimes stop considering you--depends on the player).

why do you need to redshirt?

I never inform of redshirt, just apply it when they report. I've never had a frosh get upset by it, but that is at D 2 or D 3...

I never tell them I will redshirt... I just try it and see if they accept. mostly is works out okay if you have a player that gets good comments from the coach about attitude (like "he still rides the bus with the team" comment).

If it doesn't work and the WE drops like a rock, I just undo it and WE goes back to previous level. Sometimes I have tried it again after that and it works okay. This is at the DIII level. I have had Frosh get mad about it... but I was willing to undo it and live with him playing that season.

The few experiments I've had with the "inform of redshirt" button have been complete failures. I just see what they think once they get on campus. If they don't take to it before the first exhibition, I take it off, wait for them not to play then, then put it back on. Usually, that works, although there have been a few times where it hasn't.

i have twice "informed of redshirt" and it has worked both times. I was not in battles for either player though.

don't inform of redshirt on a player you're in a battle on, but it works. I do it all the time in DI, but only on players ranked 51st or lower in their position. It helps that I have high major teams.

There are exceptions to the first thing I said here - I was able to successfully recruit a guy I took from UVA who I started off with inform of redshirt. UVA had no extra resources, though, and had not put much into him, so he was "wide open to other offers."

Informing of RS works if you send some effort (or, I'd imagine, if you've previously put in a great amount of effort... it is just a negative effort effect, I think) and is 100% effective.

Additionally, I'd say that I am ~60% successful on RS players who come to campus without knowledge either way (as a 4 year HS player). My experience is over a sample size of probably ~20 and is strictly in D2 or D3. I am probably ~1/8 or so on trying to RS sophomores without them getting upset.

D3 players rarely get upset about it, but it does happen sometimes. Although oddly enough I once had a freshman get upset about a redshirt his freshman year so I took it off, but then he accepted it his soph year.

To RS someone in D1 you just about have to use the button. I throw a campus visit, hit send. Then inform of RS, hit send. Then campus visit, hit send. I am sure doing this "sandwich method" has no real impact, but it is just the way I have always done it with players ranked 50+. I have gotten players as low as 26th at their position to RS recently, but had to spend my *** off. Like an extra 10K.

so pork you'd leave them unconsidered for a few cycles while you dribbled some more effort into them once they rejected the R/S or did you hit them with $10k the very next cycle and then they were back considering you and now OK w/the R/S?

So you can put a redshirt on a player before the season starts and see if he takes it and then if he gets upset you can pull the redshirt and there will be no aftereffect? I know I redshirted someone once and there work ethic went way down. So if you pull it everything goes back to normal? You can redshirt until the player plays in a game right?

Yes

Ok so I just redshirted a guy, keep in mind the season tip off is in about 3 hours. It went through and my AD sent me a message that said the paperwork went through and he hoped that I had already talked to the kid about it. Does that mean it all went well or should I be expecting something from the kid, and hopefully before 2 am so I can pull the redshirt, any ideas?

It won't update with the players thoughts on the redshirt until the next cycle.
