How does 20 DEF do this? Topic

I realize that I shot too many threes, like I say later this was just a post for blowing off steam. Now its about what DEF rating mean if anything.

I would have won if lyons even hit 5 of 16 3pts.

Okay my nightly rant lately is over... I just gotta say though if 20 DEF can do this with Speed than I am recruiting all wrong I guess.

Some if it is he's shooting too many threes and he seems to have "senioritis". He hasn't shot particularly well against anyone. What do you have him set at? If he's at +2, then he's just jacking 3's and that doesn't always work, no matter what they are rated.

The solid IQ and the speed may be plenty to maake up for the def rating.

He was set at +1 this last game. I kinda was resigned to losing out this non-conference schedule so I figured I would try something drastic and give him some big % of shots since he is supposed to be my best shooter.

1. Their playing -1 isn't terribly conducive to 3 balls(setting your guy at +1), especially with man.

2. Good spd rating and decent ath rating from the defender. Good def. IQ rating.

3. Just a bad shooting night.

4. Opponent could have also been double teaming him.

I think the +1 was the problem. He was probably forcing shots.

I think he's just off to a slow start and, like others said, is forcing some shots, especially 3's. I wouldn't worry too much. I would set him at 0 instead of +1 and continue calling plays for him. He'll come around!

Welcome to HD, where defensive ratings count for virtually nothing.

Ath/Sp count far more than Def. I guess in the HD world it's saying he has poor defensive fudnamenals but has a good understanding of the defensive sets and makes up for the fundamentals with superior ath/sp.

Do you understand what the defensive rating even means? It isn't how good the player plays defense, it is the players willingness to play D.

To even begin to say that that should be the only thing taken into account for how good a player plays D is insane. A players physical abilities are much much more important. If you don't have the tools to stay with your man it really doesn't matter how much you want to guard him, you just can't.

If you use the defensive rating to tell you exactly how good a defender a player is you are not anywhere near being close to how good he is / can be.

1.) I gotta say I never said its the only thing that should be taken into account. 60 Spd and 60 Ath and 99 Def should be better at defense than 99 Spd and 60 Ath and 20 Def, how does speed when according to you "doesn't want to make him play defense" mean he can guard anyone than? You just said he doesn't want to play defense.

2.) I am saying a 20 DEF should never stay with basically anyone, no matter his physical talents, not a 60 vs 90 but 20 DEF here. Some of the NBA Super Stars absolutely suck on Defense, how could you ever rate these in HD? They just sit there and watch people run by the them, they know what they should do they just don't do it. This fall into their want to play Def.

3.) I gotta say I never have played a game with such weird ratings as HD. In this game DEF means nothing, how does this make sense? Basically your saying if the guy is fast and ath he could have 1 def and shut down his man?

I read the what defense means from WIS:
Defense (def): like rebounding, defense refers to a player's defensive fundamentals and their desire to play defense. Again, knowledge of the fundamentals and having the desire are great, but you also need the athleticism and speed to be a great defender.

So in other words he doesn't have the desire and he doesn't have the fundamentals either. Which part of that wouldn't make him a good defender? I know the guys fast, but if he doesn't want to use it, and he doesn't know how to guard a guy he's doomed to be a bad defender....

The problem with the D rating is defensive IQs. They work against each other, a player with high defensive IQ would mean he knows where to be in his defensive sets while a low D rating means he has bad fundamentals but these two things contradict each other. The way HD works is the IQ trumps the D rating, so the player knowing how to play the defense overshadows his weak fundamentals. Once IQ gets high all that matters is ath/sp. Early in a player's career when his IQs are low than D rating matters more (not 100% on this but I've had guys with high D ratings and low IQs be effective defenders).

True that. Last couple seasons I've had the worst (literally) def average for the top teams, and it wasn't really close. On average we were about 20 points lower then the other top elite teams. If we win tonight, we just won back to back titles. This year I was at 43 and the next lowest was a 60. We are 2nd in def PPG, 4th in FG %, top 30 in 3 point %, and it wasn't against sim ai or scrums to boost it.
