Losing as a 1 seed in rd 1 support group Topic

Lost last night to sim Memphis as a 1 seed in Naismith (27 pt favorite). Wondering if others have similar stories.

GF, in D2 I had the #1 team all season long. Won 29 straight games, after losing the season opener, and was beat in the second rnd, but never anything like what happened to you.

I would be furious, you have my condolences.

That just shouldn't happen. It really proves that the important parts of HD are recruiting, scheduling and lastly, gameplanning. The RNG just said it was time for a 16 seed to win. Nothing you did wrong other than to expect sanity to prevail.

Not quite the same, but many seasons ago in D3 Tark, I ran the table and finished 29-0 going into the NT. Due to some Sim teams in my conference dragging down the old RPI, I ended up with a 2 seed in my bracket.

Wouldn't you know, in the first round, I ran into a slowdown/-5 and lost by a couple of points. That was a rather painful play-by-play to read........

By the way, grecian, both your forum thread and your posts in the ACC Coaches Corner have been nothing but class. Many coaches would have used this as an opportunity to throw a childish fit full of profanity.

I'm sure you are upset and the way you present yourself speaks volumes about your character. Don't leave the game, we need you.

Having been in a conference with Grecian for a number of seasons now, I feel pretty confident in saying that he is a totally class act.

Unreal...Memphis lost to the 220 RPI at home earlier in the season as well...bizarre.

Ditto!

Looking at the game and quoting another classic HD coach vandydave, the press is magic.

There is no way that your team should have shot as small a number of free throws as they did against the fullcourtpress. Memphis is not a complete garbage team they did have some talent, but if they were running the fullcourt press (-2 the second half) like they did against your team, you should have been at the line more than you were in my opinion.

sorry to hear that grecian! its a shame a 99% favorite has to lose 1% of the time :( if its any consolation, my guess is the only reason it happened to you is because you've had so many 1 seeds over your career (just guessing from tark, where you are a regular).

maybe this little story will cheer you up. i once fought my way to the #1 overall seed in d1, which has only happened to me once or twice. after the initial jubilation, i decided to see which 16 seed i would be destroying on my way to the second round. wouldn't you know it, it turned out to be OR and his legendary UCONN squad, who despite a rocky season, pulled together a great run to win a very tough big east conference tournament. so much for jubilation! well, i know this would be a better story if we lost, but we didn't, but it was still pretty depressing waiting to see what would happen :O i figured if we could survive such a daunting 16 seed, the gods would shine down upon us the rest of the way, and wouldn't you know it, they did. so, maybe you were just getting your bad luck out of the way now, so your next great team could live up to their true potential =) and i bet they will!

Personally I think the reason so many 1v16 happen in this game though is seedings. I know people don't like to hear it, but that is my true though. Now if you get screwed into a #2 seed thats not what I am talking about. I am talking more about the fact of finding the worst 15 and 16 seeds.

Heck this season a team in my conference had a rocky start to the year and had a horrid RPI but won 5 of the last 6 and then ran the conference tourney to get into the NT. They were then seeded 16th after just beating me, at the time a top 20 RPI.

You will know when seeding is correct when 1v16 only happens maybe once every calendar year for all of HD. Also just my thoughts but isn't there a bottom conference that would have a much worse team than any Mid/Major conference?

That sucks. I've lost about four or five times in the second round as a 1, but never in the first (although all in D2/D3).

It's not because the "RNG feels like a 16 should win," it's because there is a lot more parity in HD than real life. You could easily be playing an incredibly talented 16 seed instead of a .500 mid-major who went on a run in the CT. Are there bad upsets that shouldn't happen in HD? Absolutely, it happens every time I lose ;) But, it happens more in HD because of the parity.

I think of this as an example of the both

1. the greater parity of HD compared to real life

but also

2. the undue number of very odd results - basically, I think the engine generates a distribution of results in which the tails are somewhat too big - part of that is a dynamic effect of what coaches do, but part of the "big tails" problem is a design element, I think

I agree with the bolded portion. And some of it is luck. You could get a coach with a talented team who is a poor gameplanner, leading to a good-but-not-great regular season. If that guy happens to gameplan well, or guess right, in the NT, well that could be a huge equalizer.

Are you saying you think there is a built-in "upset factor"?
